I’ve always said that dot sights allow you to have fast follow-up shots but that initial sight acquisition will never be as fast as irons. Using sights like the Trijicon HDs or similar Ameriglos, the bright front dot is unbelievably easy to acquire. But since eye positioning is important with a red dot, it takes a lot more practice to speed that part of the process up. I imagine with practice it can be nullified but your average Joe or Jane will be quicker on the first shot with irons.

I switched to big dot front and blacked out rear on my carry gun and never looked back.

Have you shot a pistol with a red dot? It's not as easy as it looks. It takes a lot of time to really get the feel for it.
I shot a couple...
I will say though that we shoot AR style rifles in the same IPSC style friendly competitions we hold at the range and I shoot my AR with an Aimpoint Comp at the very front of the picatinny rail on the receiver(not saying it's the same and I'm sure repetitious cheek welds help) but I am pretty quick at finding the dot and putting it on target pretty accurately...I'm hoping in the same IPSC scenario I can do just as well with a pistol.
