I hunt almost exclusively in the Bonnet Carre spillway for rabbits, I have one beagle who is a pretty awesome dog. In past years that the spillway stays closed we could almost always shoot a rabbit or three, and jump a handful. But with the spillway being open so much the numbers have decreased. I was surprised to jump one last weekend on the south side. I really enjoy just being out there watching her run and looking for deer signs, so shooting one is just lagniappe

I recently bought a duck boat and can now access a few more areas in Joyce/Maurepas so I have that to look forward to in February. I have been to Point Au Chene, but did not get to explore like I wanted. Also shot a rabbit on Pearl River WMA. I am from NOLA so I dont like driving too far to like Sherborne. I can also hunt a levee in Plaquimines parish that has a few.

But I guess I was just trying to see if anyone on here still hunts rabbits and what they do to be successful? I have a strategies that seem to work more times than not.
Also any old timers that hunted the "glory days" of rabbit hunting, or any spots that used to crawl with rabbits?

I had beagles probably 20 years,it was my favorite hunting. Before the timber companies started leasing their land there was plenty of places to run dogs in Central La.Then I got to be friends with old guy in Eunice that knew lots of people with land that let him run dogs.We had some good times,4 or 5 guys would bring couple of dogs each.Cook a sauce piquant in the woods.Run dogs all morning, eat lunch and sit around talking dogs.
Then he died, all the land here was leased so I phased out of it.The National Forests had a few rabbits but they had more deer than rabbits so I started having trouble with that.
I still miss it but times change.

I have a place just outside of McComb that is full of them, riding around just before dark it is easy to see 20-30 of em, would not mind having a good dog up there after deer season???

My dad has 5 beagles but we usually wait to run them till after deer season. My grandpa used to always say to stand wherever the rabbit was jumped, that sucker will always pass back right there. It still is my favorite hunting.

My friends and I would rabbit hunt many afternoons after school. We would hunt on the levies around Lake Houma. Nobody ever batted an eye to a group of kids riding bikes with shotguns slung over our shoulders. We ran my two dogs. My male was really good. His name was General Lee, and my grandfather said he was the best dog he ever saw.

I haven't been rabbit hunting in20 years. Good times.

We used to Bush hog the pastures and shoot cottontails. When you got down to the last 10-12 yard swath of uncut grass it was like a free-fire zone in a combat theatre. My brother would mow and shoot whatever ran out in front. I took care of whatever ran out behind the tractor. Good times is an under statement.

Not always,I saw one swamp rabbit hit a creek, swim upstream and climbed up on a log and hunkered down.I shot him off the log, didn’t need no Einstein rabbits.

Not really an ol timer but as a kid in the 80s I used to hunt with my uncle and his buddies who ran dogs on the islands and spoil banks in Venice (wagon wheel, pass a loutre wma, south west pass). There was what seemed to be an endless supply of them and if I remember right hardly any coyotes down there back then. We would kill as many as 50-70 plus a hunt!!
And yes I can remember my pawpaw telling me when we jumped one that I should follow the dogs and he would wait there since he was old cus they would come back to that spot!!
Bush hogging for them is almost as much fun just don’t get to hear the dogs sing!!

I would agree, swamp rabbits are a totally different animal. They will come back sometimes, but not even close to the ole cottontails.

The boat will help a lot. My dad used to have 5-10 beagles growing up. He used to put them in the flat boat and fish a lot of the marsh islands out of Buras and other areas. That was all pre Katrina, so a lot of those areas don't exist anymore.

Yeah I have tried every trick in the book to break my dog off deer, and she is much better than she used to be, but not totally broken.

I obviously do not know where you live, but the only places I see them around NOLA is in New Orleans East and by UNO. I used to work out there.

I see a few in laplace but not many.

My Dad has beagles when I was growing up. It was awesome because we had lots of woods behind the house in lower bayou blue. We’d rabbit hunt almost every weekend. Don’t have dogs anymore, but we still hunt in Raceland. Not as many rabbits there as before, but we still jump a few. Shot 4 last weekend and missed a few more. We brought my wife’s nephews and I had more fun watching them hunt. 2 of them each shot their first rabbit which was awesome. They were jacked up. Doesn’t get much better hunting than rabbits, especially with dogs.
