Quick trip to Miami - Bringing fly rod for peacock bass... any advice
Hey OB folks,

I've got a work trip down to Miami this week. Have been doing some research and looks like it's pretty easy to get on some fish in the urban areas there with all the canals. Specifically, watched some vids on catching peacock bass, and was just curious if the OB had any experience with this.

Seems like advice on vids consists of:

Scout canals via google maps for access
Generally bright baitfish like patterns (clouser, deceiver, etc) can work pretty well
And rod 5-6 wt is probably fine

If anyone has any better or more detailed advice on locations/strategy/flies/etc, would appreciate it, as I head out tomorrow to CT, then MIA on Weds night and won't have a lot of prep time for it. But should have Thurs afternoon and some of Fri early AM free to try and have some fun.

Clousers with some mylar or flash. They make a type of Clouser in south florida with heavier eyes that allows it to sink quicker and can be stripped faster without losing natural action. They are bucktails....something like the hammer or along those lines. Its fast fishing....just about anything with some flash will work.....they don't seem particular. The Oscars are the same way....a lot like overgrown warmouth..

If the splash you make with the topwater bait doesn't go over your head you're doing it wrong

Can't speak to fly tactics, but the hardest part is finding access to canals. Without getting robbed.

Good to note I suppose... Will probably hit up a fly shop asap and ask around while I'm there.

Get you an out of state fishing license at myfwc.com

It’s a crime if you don’t have a license down here.

Yeah. They do 3 day out of state passes. Figure I'll do that for now.

In Brazil, we ripped giant plugs. If you got into a bunch of em, you could switch over to a jig and keep catching them.
I assume with a fly you would strip something in fast and use a streamer or something similar.

Looks like the weather may turn out shite for me unfortunately. But it's Florida, so I'm not holding my breath on the forecast either... May still get a window somewhere.

I hope you get a chance to catch some. I take a 6wt when I'm down there. I almost always wish I'd brought my 8wt.

I've got my shorter length (just under 8') 6wt.. hoping it'll get the job done. Gonna try to stop by local shop for some extra flies but got a few I think should work... Hell, I saw someone make one out of an airhead wrapper that got bites, so they don't seem TOO picky...

Its probably too early, but if you find any on beds you could throw a 2x4 over the bed and they'd hit it.

Good to know for future trips. I'm unfortunately on a tight window this go around, but I'll be in town more later this year. I appreciate the rec.
