Looking at this Savage for my son (soon to be 12 year old), fairly novice shooting experience.

I've always been partial to wanting a 7mm-08 for him, not sure exactly why. Just like the idea of the versatility of the cartridge and long term usage of the rifle.

Will most likely put new glass on it immediately.

Savage axis is the perfect starter rifle. And i have a few myseld i take out from time to time. Shoots great. I dont own a 7mm-08 so i dont know how hard ammo is for that round. That would be my main focus on buying a new rifle. You dont want to be searching internet all year for ammo

the reviews are a little critical about the bolt action.

they also have a ruger rifle w a bit better reviews. I think my son would like the camo on the axis for whatever that is worth.

Don't think you could do much better for a first deer rifle baw. You're gonna end up shooting it more than him though lol.

Any thoughts to a 18" barrel vs 20"? Ruger is an 18, savage 20.

Both will be quite loud, especially the 18”. Double up on hearing protection at the range and use it hunting if at all possible.

Be aware that the compact rifles are lighter so they have more felt recoil.
It’s likely not an issue but something to be aware

Also, I’m sure it isn’t an issue getting a replacement stock for the Savage when he gets older. I have never looked, but the Ruger has a bunch of options.

7mm-08 is probably one of the best cartridges for southeast deer.

I do not own a Savage Axis, but I do have that Ruger American in 7mm-08. Compared to my Ruger American Ranch 6.5 Grendel, the 7mm-08 feels like a much better gun. Action is very smooth. Shoots lights out at 100 yds with Hornady Lite Recoil loads. Probably can't go wrong with either one.

Not sure where you're located, but you're more than welcome to check out my Ruger if you're ever around this area

I bought my 15 yr old the Ruger American Predator in 308. He loves it. He wanted a gun with a threaded barrel so he could shoot it with one of my Omegas. He is spoiled in that he only likes to shoot suppressed now.

It may sound silly, the most accurate setup I’ve messed with is that exact one, with Federal blue box 150 SPs. It’s amazing!

Had a savage axis in 243 and it would cloverleaf with cheap factory ammo.
The finish was very prone to rusting and it would have to stayed sprayed to not just rust on a humid morning, I replaced it for her with a begarra 6.5.
One thing I will say about 7mm08 is that you should plan to buy the ammo now and get 10 boxes of them because they have been hard to find the last several years compared to 308/6.5

What ammo are y'all running for 7mm-08. I have a weatherby youth 7mm-08 and it's pretty snappy shooting 139gr hornady whitetail loads. Thinking about giving the Hornady custom lite a try.

Perfect starter youth rifle.

Just make sure you can get ammo, I got my kids a .308 last year over the 7mm-08 because it was impossible to find ammo for 7mm-08 in hunting season last few years. Hopefully that has changed but I would not buy a rifle without checking. IF ammo is hard to find now will be impossible during hunting season.

Got one for my daughter when she was 8. She's been shooting it since. If she doesn't go I will almost always take it for myself. It's a shooter. 140gr Fusions if you can find em. Started shooting Norma 140s this year and they seem to be a damn fine load for a value price.

I purchased that exact gun in 7mm-08 for my daughter when she was nine. It had a bit of a kick for her at nine years old. Both daughters have shot dear with it and it is a great gun. With that caliber i didn't even bring a gun for me if i had them with me in the stand.

As much as it pains me to say it, if you're not a handloader I'd probably opt for the creedmoor. Not that you have to be a handloader for 7mm-08, but ammo availability has been not great and with the popularity of the 6.5 is seems like there are always options on the shelf. Either cartridge is fine deer, and in general, if the 6.5 is not enough gun then 7mm-08 is not the answer.

Either way, I'd lean towards a 20" barrel over an 18". I have a .260 with an 18.5" barrel and it has a lot to say when I pull the trigger
