I just built a new house and am about to install the landscaping myself. I have heard that there are a ton of nurseries in Forest Hill and I am wondering a couple of things:

1) How many of the nurseries sell to retail customers? My worry is that they only deal with wholesale.

2) Can I really save enough money going up there from Baton Rouge to buy all my plants to make it cost effective?

TIA!

Check Doug Young, just act like youve been there before if you know what Im saying

ETA: The prices are unreal. You can save hundreds to thousands depending on how much you are doing.

There are a shite load of nurseries, lots of them sell to the public.

I've always heard it's worth going up there, no first hand experience though.

Yes. Talking about 1/3 to 1/4 the retail cost in some cases. It's crazy how much cheaper.

Young Family Nurseries are comprised of well over 200 acres of container grown plants on six properties. Only the main 150 acre nursery located in Forest Hill, LA is open to public sales.

The nursery's primary market is compised of other gorwers, brokers, re-wholesale nurseries, retail nurseries, independent garden centers, and landscapers.

DYN is open to the public 7 days a week and plant material is sold to the public on a self-service basis.

Time limitations at this time restrict staff from being able to offer email, telephone, and sales service to non-nurseryman. On entering the nursery, the public is given a map and a catalog. If a visitor has minimal plant knowledge, the nursery tends to be a fun experience.

Langston has some connections up there, perhaps he will see this. There are A LOT of nurseries up there. Some specialize on certain plants, others have other plants. IT is really impressive.

There are tons, it won't be hard to find one that sells retail. I pass thru there all the time but I have never bought there. I'm told if youre doing a whole yard from scratch, then yes it's worth it.

I am doing the whole yard, front and back.

Appreciate the responses! I didn't want to make the 2 hour trip up there from Baton Rouge and come back empty handed or breaking even.

Yes and yes. I went up there while redoing two side beds and a fence line in the back. Took a truck and a large tarp. Filled the bed with great stuff and covered it for trip back home. Everything I bought thrived. Just went from nursery to nursery looking at stuff. Didn't buy at the first three I stopped at, but then went back to one of them after looking at a few more and loaded up.

I was just looking at their pricing sheet online. Literally 1/4 of the prices of local nurseries. If you're buy quite a bit, then it would definitely be worth a couple hour drive.

Just make sure you have a way to cover all that stuff. Who knows what it would look like after 2 hours of 70mph in the bed of a truck.

I may go down there one weekend.

I have already priced a UHaul covered utility trailer to bring up there. Just not sure it will be big enough.

You know what I would do? I would call one - particularly one on the main drag. Regardless if they do or don't, but I bet they can tell you those who do sell to folks off the street. And, you can also get an idea of what plants they have and who else in the area might carry what you're looking for.

That's what I would do before I drove to Forest Hill, and it's only about half an hour drive for me.

My mom and a group of her friends all loaded up and pulled our cattle trailer down there. They came back loaded to the top!

That's the way to do it if you just want to see it and buy a few plants/trees. Doing a whole yard like your saying is definitely worth it.

Definitely worth the drive. There are a lot and plenty of choices so shop around and you won't be disappointed
