I would make sure the gun has a serial # first of all. That would be a big sticking point if you were in possession of it and the # had been removed. Then have the sheriff's department run the #'s or a cop friend. If it were me an it had a # on it I would prob just take it as a gift. The 80% statement that you made makes me think you have good hunch so I might would follow up on that hunch and have the #'s ran. It's possible a local gun dealer could run the #'s also but then they may call the cops on you.

Go have your local PD run the serial number to be sure it isn't stolen. It might be someone's family heirloom and would love to have it back. I had a coworker that had one stolen that was part of a matching, consecutive serial numbered pair given to him and his brother. 8 years later he got it back.
