So for you guys that have bought boats from individuals, when you gave a deposit, did you get some type of receipt or other documentation? Any suggestions appreciated.

I would give any money until a notarized bill of sale has been signed.

I put a deposit on a boat last year that I came to pick up the next day with cash. I drew up a receipt of deposit and intent to sell for set price, with the seller guaranteeing the title. We signed off on that. The next day, I came back and we finished business with a bill of sale.

Pretty much this. At awritten contract stating all the terms and what you paid and make sure you include the offer is irrevocable for some period of time. You don't need a lawyer or any special words. Just the terms, a description of the boat and signatures. Be sure to include a statement of what you've already paid.

Anything prior to the bill of sale should be drafted as a binding contract to buy and sell.

You don't actually need a bill of sale in LA. The transfer of title acts as the bill of sale.

A good firm hand shake will suffice.

Anything with the proposed agreement, signed and notarized will do.
