Pulled the trigger on a Kimber 1911 today
Posted by CharlesLSU on 1/10/21 at 6:22 pm198
Custom II two tone.
Was considering some others on the higher end of the spectrum but decided to go with best bang for the buck.
Anybody have one? Thoughts?

Going to seriously look into getting one since they moved their operation to Alabama.

Well ask first, buy later.
Kimber's are not a premium choice, they are not a bang for the buck gun, they use to be good but over the years the quality has gone downhill. They skimp on materials and quality coatings and their guns corrode. It will rust unless you bath it in something. Kimber might fix it if you approach them the right way but it will just happen again. The MGM parts aren't all bad, the problem is Kimber likes to cut corners, they like a showy product without much substance so they will make the gun pretty (long enough for someone to buy it) but then use the cheapest parts they can source.

Had another dealer/FFL (friend) speak highly of them. Also know there is a bit of an anti-Kimber movement with gun snobs.
I researched the particular model and found largely stellar reviews. Did find complaints tbh.
We shall see. If there are issues, I’ll either send it in or let my local smith work on it.
ETA: 5 years ago they did have issues. Allegedly that’s been resolved. Did you own one?

Kimber went to crap when they went mass produced big box store strategy.
Have a friend with a gun store that stopped selling them when more than 50% were being sent back to factory with coatings and jamming issues.
Older kimbers are awesome.
For medium priced 1911s go w Springfield, Sig, and others.

Good friend owns a gun store. They have had to send several kimbers back over the last several months as they were rusted when they got them in.

I respect that. Mine was slick as owl shite.
See, my main outreach was to folks who have actually owned them and experienced them either first hand or close second hand.
The digging around I get 90% hearsay, he-said she-said stuff.
I bulk shipment comes in to a gun store is kind of apples to oranges......tbh
I do find it odd this gun maker has such a back and forth bickering match between people who own (ed) them and people who actually have never owned them but feel compelled to render opinions.

yeah because Kimber has a dealer incentive program where you get free guns for selling a certain amount
I was a Kimber dealer for years and much of what was said in this thread is true. Their rifles are even WORSE. Had a few customers whose rifles just didn't shoot. Sent back to Kimber and they couldn't get them to shoot either. They said tough luck.
There are much better 1911 options at the same price point. Are they fine guns for the casual user? Sure. Far from a premium option though.

guys, not trying to be antagonistic, but these "stories" are not from actual owners.
and everybody has a "friend who owns a gun store". Thing is, I know some too......and a couple are either idiots or biased as hell.

Look at Rock Island Armory, too. Competitive price point with a solid 1911 model.
