If you have to ask whether they are nubs or does let them walk, especially this early in the year. You did the right thing.

I've killed a few BBs, but have got better with assessing over the years. Head, muscle tone and tarsals are a must to look at. More than all that for me is the mannerisms of the deer. I rarely see a mature doe who is oblivious to its surroundings much like a young deer.

^yep. Also, long snout on a doe is a good judge. My first bow kill was a buttonhead at 35yards. Could have sworn it was a big ole doe by herself. I learned quick after that. Hell of a shot I put on his tiny arse though!

The deer should be shot because it has no fawns with it and is most likely not producing offspring

Just and FYI, there is no such thing. Sure, there may be a doe that didn't carry and fawn that year, but it is absolutely false that a doe will be "barren" or not able to produce.

Good Glass solves the problem. a simple pair of 32X binoculars are more than sufficient to see dem nubs at 250yds

Fwiw I've been around plenty of button buck kills that were with other does. So I'm not sure it's worth sweating a single doe to be honest. Now post rut it's certainly very rare as the button bucks are kicked away, but early season they are still with their moms plenty often.

I personally haven't been shooting does much lately, but when I do I never shoot one over 50-75 yards away and only after 7:30am and only in the am. I prefer to make it a nice easy shot and recovery, and leave as little Chance as possible to have a tracking issue.

I got burned even when following this. Foot was there.

Doe and yurlin' come walking down a trail just like they were supposed to. Make a great shot on the doe. Got check her out and turns out it's a spike(?). The horns, if you will, were like flat discs. Not a button buck-this was clearly a 1.5 year old. I just wonder why those two were walking together. I guess the fawn lost his/her mom and just latched on to this young buck. Pissed me right off.

Same here. There's enough opportunity to kill does that I only take the convenience shots where I get a good look at them. After the 1st or 2nd week of December it's moot until the last weekend, because there's no telling what could be behind them.

I was on a guest meat hunt and shot a solo doe. It was a button buck.

Definitely caught shite from the club president for a while.

I passed on one solo doe in a plot after that, but was sure to take pics for it for 2 and a half hrs. My uncle said it was a mature doe and it should have been shot.

Probably pissed the young buck off too. He wasn’t ready for that responsibility.
