Have inherited land in Acadia parish that has a wooden bridge across a parish drainage canal allowing ingress/egress for the property from a state Highway. The bridge is in need of replacement or major repair. Think I know the answer but the bridge is my responsibility as the property owner correct?

Yep sounds like this is not on a public roadway. That would mean it is up to you to fix it.

Probably not the case for a bridge, but apparently you have to get a permit to install a culvert on state roadways.

My opinion who ever built it needs to maintain it. Since it's over a drainage canal there is a chance the parish built although slim at best.

Go talk with the public works director of the parish and get his/her opinion. If you have to replace it there might be updated height requirements so check on that also.

I would hesitate discussing with any government official. Repairing / Replacing what you have in short order may not require any permit or approval. Getting on their list / radar may require you to have an engineer design and replace it. And permits and approvals.

I'm no specialist but I am curious on this.

Would the parish police jury not help since it is over a parish water way?
I have a family member who owns some land. The land is cut in the center by a parish drainage canal. 5 to 7 years ago the police jury built/installed a bridge over said canal for us. I have no idea what kind of deal was made or if any money was exchanged. Im assuming a right of way was given to the parish in exchange for them building/maintaining the bridge.

I would think they were responsible for building the original bridge. Up to the land owner to maintain.

I have never heard of a parish building a bridge for someone just because it crosses parish drainage servitude.

We have built all of the bridges over canals on our property. Even across canals that the parish maintains (albeit small ones)

I was thinking that if the land originally had road access and then the drainage canal cut it off, they would be responsible for re-establishing access. This doesn't seem to be the case here though.

Go to the courthouse to see what the conveyance records say about that particular piece of property And possibly bridge. Go back as far as you can in the records.

Talk to all the old people in the family to see what they know.
