Help me out here: Under what scenario is burning weeds with a propane torch the right way to go?

Someone will explain this to us. I've just seen them marketed for this more lately than I can remember.

Weed Dragon

I think they're good for keeping them out of the cracks of the driveway. I assume also if you're like me and have a drainage swale that is nothing but weeds. I've also read that if you're going to lay sod, rather than spraying roundup prior, these are a good option. Not sure though...which is why I'm asking.

The slang term for that torch is "weed burner"

I sell more for industrial use--heating pipe before welding in the winter, but have sold a few for weed burning

I bought that exact one to try for weed burning in my garden. Problem i have is it seems to get it hot enough to burn the weeds I feel like its too much heat for my plants. I'm just gonna get a bale of hay and cover everything except about a 1' circle at my plants. Should just smother the weeds and not let them grow.

But i do use that torch to burn my ditch and it great to get charcoal evenly lit up on the pit and ready to cook.

For those "green" folks who are scared a little paraquat or glyphosate is gonna make their chirren be born nekkid or their goober fall off.

I will say that a couple of years ago, I set my tiller down in green sod to pull up some garden rows and I wished I had one of these to burn the rhizomes that I pulled to the top and raked up to keep them from sprouting.

This was only a problem because I decided spur of the moment to put in a garden and didn't use glyphosate/cardboard ahead of time to kill the vegetation.

They're fun to use just because of the fact it's like a mini flame thrower, but the practicality of them is limited in my opinion. They use a lot of propane quickly and damage anything around them.

The proponents of them like to claim that it eliminates using synthetic chemicals and therefore better for the environment. How can burning everything to the ground, little animals included, actually be good for the environment?

Yea I definitely don't give a shite about this aspect. I'm really just wondering if it's more effective. I have about a 10x20 area of my yard that is low and has every species of weed I'm certain. I've been spraying and spraying and I can never kill all of it. Think I might try to scorch it all and prep it to lay sod there. Also, I want to justify playing with a torch

when you're too lazy to actually weed your beds. first use round-up on the weeds, then burn away the dead.

I use mine for catching brush piles on fire. It will speed up boil time on a crawfish pot, but that's just showing off at that point.

I bought that exact one for my house to do a couple large areas. It worked great to kill off everything and get prepared to grade and plant grass. But as far as controlling weeds, it's not very effective in my opinion. I tried it and it gets so damn hot that it burns anything in close proximity.

Burning is a great way to get rid of unwanted undergrowth and transfer nutrients back to the soil. It's fantastic for the environment when done right.

Using 40 pounds of propane to kill weeds around your driveway isn't doing it right at all, but it sure is fun.

Works well for annual weeds. Perennials not as good.

I use mine to lite the fire pit and BBQ pits. No need for lighter fluid.

This is undeniable.

Also a great for starting charcoal for the pit or burning piles and even the occasional ant pile & wasp nest.

I found one at a garage sale. Tried using it on weeds but it isn't very effective. And by not effective I mean HOT, most weeds come back from root, damage to nearby desirable plants, uses quite a bit of propane.

Fun to use though and I find other uses for it all the time.

I have access to chemicals that'll burn weeds worse than any torch, but I bet the torch is more fun

I have a paver driveway that's about 10 years old Now and the weeds are hell I spray almost weekly, will this thing put any 'burn marks' on my brick pavers?
