My current prop on my boat (19.5') is a four blade 23 pitch prop on a yamaha 200 hpdi 2 stroke. With a full tank, two guys, and minimal gear it runs 52 mph and rpm hovers around 5200. I know I can get a better performing prop. Any suggestions? Smaller pitch? Prop with vent holes?

I would go down in pitch but keep the 4 blades.

You are at 5200 RPMs for what the motor is rated at. Going up in pitch, you will loose RPM's, same going down, higher RPM's.

Best bet is to try and find a prop shop that will work with you to test out other props.

Its probably rated to turn 5000-5500. You could go down an inch of pitch keep the 4 blade and maybe gain a half mph. You're splitting hairs at this point. For a fishing boat your prop is probably close to perfect if anything just a hair heavy.

You could get a 3 blade and start beating cup out of it and work it to death for that last 3/4 mph but it's not worth it.

Vent holes only affect your hole shot. The exhaust gas vents through the holes which cause slip and allows the prop to achieve higher rpm's faster.

Go to a 3 blade trophy series prop in a 24-25 pitch. if you have some issues with it coming out the hole a touch slower at almost a slight bog before breaking over you can vent it. If you still need a touch more hole we can talk about cupping it. if you are over 5500 rpm when rolling out you can always have it propped up to a 26 or if its lower than 5000 rpm rollin out you can prop it back down to 24, 23 range. Now keep in mind a 3 blade will naturally be less hole shot than that 4 blade but there are ways you can get some back. Have to make up in your mind if your wanting top end or hole shot. 3 blade if you want more top end and get that leading edge worked up good so it bites the water and hauils arse

Lot of spot on responses.

I went from a 3 blade to a 4 blade and my top speed dropped but my hole shot improvement was worth it.

Sounds like you have a pretty good setup, but a local prop shop should have some props you could try out if you’re serious about buying a new one.

I run a Tempest Plus (3 blade) which is faster than my Rev4 but I loose the hole shot and lifting of a 4-blade

Yeah my hole shot is very good. If I’m in a foot of water and jack plate at 4 with trim tabs down, I usually can get out the hole. Now grass in the intake is a whole different matter. I’m also having issues with the motor pissing even if I clean the piss hole and the intake with a brush. Sounds like I may need to change the impeller. I’ll look into a 3 blade. Coming out the hole at times isn’t as important to me as top end speed especially if I’m running hard all day.

As was stated, vented 3 blade are a good compromise for a 4 blade as far as hole shot.

3 blade improves top end.

4 blade improves hole shot and lift.

What’s your max rpm?

Drop 2 degrees of pitch and you are at the magical 5,600 rpm's. Find a place that will let you try your identical prop in the lower pitch or look for that prop used. Bassboatcentral has used props all the time and you may find one there. You are looking at $100/blade to drop pitch and computer balance, can probably find a used one for that price. What brand 4 blade?

Definitely change your impeller. Cheap insurance.

Max RPM is 5200. If I trim the motor up a little I can maybe get to 5300. The prop is a yamaha saltwater series.

52mph with a 200 yammy sounds really low to me. you should be running 60+

assuming this is a bass boat.

Rule of thumb is 200 rpm per inch of pitch either way.

Unless you're very seriously dissastified with it I wouldn't touch it. It's right in the sweet spot for WOT rpm with full load.

Depends on if you have a VMax 3.1L or 3.3L, or the standard 2.6L engine.

Sounds like you are needing to lift the motor up on the mounting holes. I'm thinking that Yammie 200 should get that flats boat to absolutely fly. I'd try a jackplate, with at least 6" of setback, and move the motor up...
