Primitive Firearm Season and Youth Hunters
I was reading the Louisiana hunting regulations and it looks like youth (17 and under) hunters can hunt deer with any legal weapon during primitive firearm season, is that correct? I was going to take my son out this weekend, but wanted to make sure I was understanding the law before doing so.

I hunt a lot with my 35 whelen . Pretty much a rifle . They aren't expensive and it's a great gun for primitive .

I'm not looking to buy a new rifle for this season. He wants to go our to the lease and try one more time this year for his first deer. I just want to make sure I am reading the regulation right and that he can hunt with my 30-06 during primitive firearm season.

That's the way I have always interpreted that rule as well. He should be able to use your 30-06.

I believe this rule applies to Honorably Discharged Veterans as well.

I thought it was 16 and under, but yes, that's correct on the firearm.

I thought it was 16 as well but something must have changed.

Youths 17 or younger may hunt deer with any legal weapon during the Primitive Firearms Season in each deer hunting area.

You are correct, 17 and under can use any rifle during primitive arms season. Good luck to y'all.

re: Primitive Firearm Season and Youth Hunters
Slight hijack, and this may be a dumb question. What is considered “youth” to be able to use any rifle during primitive season? Is the youth required to have a hunter safety card? Or if my 5 year old takes well to her new rifle, can she and I go take a stand with her 7mm-08?

First thing she asked when I pulled it out was “when we going hunting?” I work this weekend(last weekend of rifle season).

ETA: Never mind... first sentence in the pamphlet

ETA2: Think it’s waived as long as I’ve got all the right shite.

Think you answered your own question, but as long as you get her tags (which are free) she can hunt with you with no hunters safety.
