Power Pole or GPS Trolling Motor

Purchased a boat a year back that came with only a hand control 70# trolling motor. My boat gets a decent amount of use through the year. Predominately fish fresh and saltwater but will run the occasional jug lines and crab nets.
Im looking to upgrade different components on the boat. Up next I would like to purchase either a power pole (or talon) or a gps trolling motor. I like the idea of being able to hold the boat in a spot with the touch of a button. I do fish with kids most of the time so being able position the boat for them to cast to a spot is quite appealing.
Looking for feedback from people that have either or both and if you could only get one (I’m no OT baller) which would you prefer?
Also recommendations of brands/models would be welcomed. TIA

I fish with a guy that got a power pole on his boat when he bought it then later installed an Ultrexx. He says that if he had the ultrexx from the start he never would of put a power pole on his boat. This is for bass fishing saltwater could be different since in saltwater fishing you will sit in one spot.

You will get way more use out of power poles. I’ve got both and the spotlock is only used when fishing rigs offshore and a few specific freshwater open water applications. I use pp many times everyday out.

I can see where most of my use would be power poles but they have a depth limit...

I would only be buying 1.
And it is my understanding the god trolling motor would hold me in one spot correct?

I need both the areas I fish.
If mainly shallow you want poles. If you are on spot lock you will be blowing the area out.
If deep, go with the Ultrex.

depends on where you fish. If you fish deeper water +6-8 ft go with a spot lock troll motor, anything less go with power poles.
Fish do get spooked by the troll motor and if its shallow you can stir up mud. Or if you are fishing in grass it could struggle to hold you in place.
if you go poles, dont do just one pole.

The trolling motor easily by an extremely large margin.
It's added a massive amount of enjoyment to the whole fishing experience. I don't work hard in the wind. I dont worry about losing my spot. I dont put a muddy arse anchor in the boat. I dont have to constantly frick with it to keep the boat headed the right direction or speed.
I can easily live without the power pole. It's useful but doesnt have near the applications that the ipilot does.

This is the best answer. I have had 3 boats with power poles and my current one has ultrex only.
It truly depends on where you fish the most.

So much more the ipilot can do.
You can record a track, next time can automatically follow it. It can run that track backwards also. You can also save spot lock spots. If you get within 1/4 mile of the spot(or track) it will automatically troll you there.
Being you have the 70, you can go with an 80, which is a little cheaper. There is a slide bracket that can keep the motor away from hanging over the bow that I would get.
That being said.. I have both.

I fish mainly 6’ or less of water. When I bought my boat I had one power pole and a hand control troll motor out on. Last year I was tired of using the PP and the Cajun anchor to hold the boat in place so my wife and kids could cast. Instead of the GPS troll motor I went with a second PP and let me tell you, this increased the ease of positioning a boat and the enjoyment of fishing by 100% for me. Even in the wind, I deploy both of the puppies and I’m stuck like chuck. Wish I would’ve done it when I ordered the boat.

I need to get with the times. This is the first I’ve heard of a GPS trolling motor.

I have both and both are used every trip. As stated above shallow water is better for poles and deeper water for spot lock.
I fish everywhere from trout on the coast to bass and reds in 1.5' of water. If you fish for both, get both.

In shallow water the trolllimg motor running constantly will blow out a spot quickly. I think the biggest factor is avatar depth of water . My pp 8’ will hold me in 8’ water which is 75% of my time

Not sure but would imagine that even with spot lock, the bow would stay put but the stern of the boat may swing around if the wind is at your back. Or does it hold the boat in that exact position?

I’m getting my Terrova put on this weekend. frickin pumped to get out there and try it out. Power poles nice but is useless in deeper water. I only have 1 so you’ve gotta position yourself to spin around. Either one beats the shite out of messing with an anchor though.

It doesn't know where the stern is. It knows it's own position and heading. If you hit the lock button while going with the current the boat will spin around. Once it gets oriented though it wont move much. I had mine on lock in camanada pass last weekend and it did fine.
I dont think I can adequately explain how bad arse it is.

I took my wife’s uncle fishing who hasn’t been fishing in 20years. First thing he asked when he walked up to the dock was if I was gonna start the motor to which I replied it was already running. Lol. His mind was blown when I hit the power poles and we went from drifting to stuck in a few seconds. He looked at me and said damn you spoiled hahahaha

Power pole in the marsh / trolling motor in the bays. I have both and never use the trolling motor.
