It's that time of year... deer season is winding down and I'm thinking about things I want to change for next year - and that includes at least two new elevated box stands.

I've looked at the pre-fab stands (such as Redneck Blinds) but they're just too expensive. If you've built your own box stands please post pic's - and point out what you like about them and what you would do different if you were replacing them.

I bought mine from a guy in Kenner that makes them. Its a 4*6 treated box on 2 ft high skids with a tin roof for $749. I can't build one for much cheaper than that.

Top pic is how it used to look before they did a clear cut and the wind knocked it over.
Bottom pic is when I was standing it up and anchoring it.

I’ve enjoyed the heck out of this stand. I made it long enough that I can stretch my legs out if I want too. Only thing I should’ve done different is make the windows smaller and the door a little higher, since I have to duck my head to get in.

4'x6' platform and 5' to the floor from the ground. I had to redo the leg braces and build another ladder with incline after the fact, but it's a comfortable 2 man stand for me and one of my kids. 2 adult men could fit if they had to.

Used old fence boards to rebuild stands that were destroyed after Ida. Came out pretty good this season.

Go 4x6, or at least 4x5. I don’t mind a wooden stand at all, but the bears like to eat the legs.

I’ve built 2 stands so far. Both with angle iron frames and plywood walls. The first one pictured is the nicest one i have built, it’s 5x6 with deer view windows. The last one is 4x6 with plexiglass panels for windows that i remove once in the stand. I am switching it to deerview windows this year. It’s nice for the kids to just be able to crack the window enough to shoot out of, and block the wind/keep the stand warm. I rarely hunt out of it alone, usually I’m in one of my lock ons. But when i do hunt out of it alone, 6ft is way too wide to be effective. I would probably build the next one 5x5. 4ft is ok for leg room, but 5 ft is just right..

As an added bonus, If you do build a 4x6 stand, it can fit in the back of the truck for transport. Also makes it easy to just back up to where you want it and stand it up.

No pics but I made mine with 4 4x4 posts and a few cheap 2x3 studs, 3/4" floor on 2x6 joists. Walls are 2nd's tin I got from the local place that sells it. Half price for seconds. Had the wood already but I figure I could build it from scratch for 100.00 tops. 5x5 and a foot off the ground.

Hardly qualifies as a box blind but I'm pretty happy with it. About 12ft to platform where two people can sit comfortably in camp chairs. I think It would run about $200 to build now. Tarp for roof needs replaces every 3ish years if a storm doesn't get it first.

What size you looking for? I find that folks use wayyyy too much lumber on box stands. And opt for treated when simply extending roof allows use to use regular old plywood and will last for decades.

I built one of my box stands 7 years ago and used treated for the structural parts. I had some free particle boards for the walls, so I used that thinking I’d have to replace them after 1 or 2 seasons. So far they aren’t showing any signs of rotting!

I also used an old net from a tennis court for upper concealment. Not too bad.

Im 55 and started deer hunting when I was about 8 years old. My father would nail any two boards in a tree and you would sit there 5 hours till he came to get you

I have not deer hunted in 20 years or so. I would love to hunt from one of these new stands.

Yeah if it’s contacting the ground, certainly use treated. I’m just talking of the walls and what not. I’ve got stands that are 20+ years old using non-treated wood everywhere except the legs and have zero rot. But all of my roofs are a minimum of 1’ wider than my stand. Most are 2’..
