So my dad gave me a gift card at a local gun shop that I have been sitting on that I need to spend.

My only current firearm is a Springfield XD 9. It stays at home. I suppose this new one would be for home defense as well

I have only hunted a few times in my life, it’s not something I see myself doing more than once every few years. However my friends have told me I should still get a shotgun. Problem is I don’t see a huge benefit of having a long barrel shotgun inside of a house if I ever need it.

My original thought was to just go buy a handgun that I liked when I held it. Something more powerful than the 9mm. It would essentially be “free” at this point, so should I just get something I like rather than try and serve a specific function?

Budget is around $1k. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

With the right ammo it's all the load you need.

The FN 509 is a good choice for a handgun.

Without anything specific why not get a Ruger Blackhawk .44 mag to blow shite up with?

Buy an AR and some 30 round mags before they are banned. Actually, on a $1,000 budget, you can almost buy 2 AR’s.

Honestly I was thinking something like this, something fun to shoot when I do go shoot it.

You don’t hunt, have a 9mm, have an AR, and just want something fun / different?

I vote spend a little more than the guitars and get a FH Five-seveN

That would be a fun gun to have and one that is different.

A Smith and Wesson 629 would be a good one with that budget.

.44 mag dirty Harry special. Great big kabooms

That’s an interesting gun for sure. I’ll take a look to see if they carry that

You just need to figure out what you want to use it for. If you want it to be recreational and be a self defense handgun, then maybe a 9mm long slide or a 45 may tickle your fancy. But you need to figure out what you want to use it for.

As far as recreational and home defense, a shotgun can be both of those things but I agree that you wouldn't want a long barrel for that. If you want a shotgun for defense, just buy an extra 18" barrel along with a longer one for hunting. But that's really only if you want to use it for hunting.

If you want another handgun that's cool too but you need to figure out what you're gonna use it for. Handguns of different sizes and chamberings are best used for different things.

Do you want a handgun for concealed carry? That would also be an important question to answer.

A fun gun indeed but super expensive to feed. I'd hate to make this dude go bankrupt just to shoot his Five Seven.

I know. I like the idea of having a handgun that can blow a door off the hinges but not really sure what I would use it for. I’m not sure I will concealed carry any time soon would love to keep something in my truck but have a toddler so I don’t want to do either of those til he is older.

Like I said in OP, I’m not exactly in the market for a gun, I think I have what I need for my purpose. But I have this gift card that I need to use.

I suppose the main function I could fill is finding something my wife would be comfortable with. Problem with that is she doesn’t really care to pick one out for herself. That’s almost why I am leaning shotgun. If she ever had to she could use it somewhat effectively without much practice.

I would maybe hunt more if I had a gun, I have opportunities, just no equipment

Thanks for everyone’s input

Sorry, I’d suggest a 1911 or maybe a AR or shotgun, whatever will give you greatest joy.
