Other than antlers, is there any reason that you would rather kill deer than pigs?

I own my own land in north La and we don't have pigs(yet). My friends have pigs on their property and I have killed plenty and eaten them. Personally, I like eating the wild hog as much as deer.

Our land is all woods and I really don't get the whole "pigs tear up the land" argument.

Please explain to me all this hog hate of the OB.

U do realize that u have to kill 70% of a hog population to keep it stable ?
And once they settle in it's a whole different feel for the deer hunting at your place. They'll run your place over

The main problem is anything a deer will eat a hog will eat and eat it faster.
I love shooting and eating wild hog. But I do have a hatred for them as I love my whitetails.

Apparently, you don't understand my point...do you really enjoy deer meat more than pork?

I'm not a deer farmer.

What? By all means, come get every hog off of my farm if you feel so strongly about them. Sure they're fun as frick to hunt, but they aren't a game that I view as a natural resource to the state of Georgia. I feel so sorry for the farmer that farms the land around me. I wouldn't sleep at night knowing the thousands of dollars in crop damage they have caused him.

ETA: since you obviously don't know what they can do. In just 1 night it only takes a 2-3 to wipe out 1 sq acre of corn. I have walked into a corn field with nearly perfect square acres of corn stalks laying on the ground. If you don't kill them off they will keep coming until there is no more food to be eaten.

I have seen them within 10 miles of our land, but have not had them on our place yet.

If you like deer hunting you don't want pigs on your place. They don't mix and your deer will all but vanish when they are around. Plus they tear shite up, eat any and all bait you put out and are a general huge pain in the arse. Little pigs are good to eat and they make pretty good sausage. But I wouldn't consider trading wild pig meat for deer if I could only have one. frick a wild pig

Well, they are a proper food animal. So that part makes sense.

You just really have to see the damage they CAN cause to appreciate how destructive they can be. If your land was being destroyed and they were literally taking bread off of your table, you might feel differently.

As far as eating, I'll eat one just as soon as the other.

i like deer hunting as it is more of a challenge. to answer you question, yes, pig meat is tastier than deer.

I don't hunt to support my eating needs. I can buy beef which is better tasting than both. I enjoy eating deer and pig, but would rather hunt deer over pigs.

Hunting turkeys is more awesome than all of that shite anyways

I understand what you're saying regarding crops and such. But my land is strictly pine plantation with lots of undergrowth. I don't worry about pigs ruining my pine crop.

I have friends in Centreville, MS that have lots of hogs and deer on their property. It doesn't seem that the hogs have run deer off at all.

Hogs will definitely run deer out of the area.

I have several Game Warden friend. They tell me they get 2 calls from hunting clubs:

1) how can we put pigs on our property so we have more animals to shoot?

2) (2 years later) How can we get the damn pigs off our property?

Be careful what you wish for.

I personally shoot every pig I see. Yes I do eat them and they are very good but you must keep the population thinned out which is much harder to do than you would think.

Their population can explode and completely take over your property. I'd rather not walk through woods infested with pigs.

And as far as eating, I really like lean deer meat. Not a huge fan of pork in general, so I'd still take deer over pigs. I might take deer over beef if it wasn't for steaks. Roast, ground meat, tenderloin.... I go with deer.

In the last 10 years of first spotting them on my place, I have seen my deer herd just about disappeared.

Not only will the run deer off, but also kill off fawns. Turkey hunting is just a thing in the pass now. The pigs will wipe out all nests.

We do put a lot of pressure on pigs to kill them off, but still not keeping them in check. I even have some guys come in a few times a year to dog hunt them. Not helping much.

It may not run them off entirely but you'll see deer a lot less. They don't like each other.

Hogs reproduce all year as opposed to only during the rut. They also can have a litter of piglets less than a year after being born. They are also omnivores and will eat anything - that means plants, crops, seeds, fruit, diesel, rotten corn, and yes meat. They will even become cannibalistic if needed.

Bleeding Purple did an entire thread on them in the FAQ. I have personally hunted on his place and the hogs have done quite a bit of damage there. Here's his thread. He knows what he's talking about.

I was into deer hunting in high school and college. At that time, we had never even heard of anyone finding hogs in our area. Sometime during college, I started spending more of my weekends at LSU games and bars and fell out of the hunting game and haven't fully gotten back into it. I still go to the camp socially a handful of times each year, but it's completely changed. Every weekend it's them checking the hog traps, or moving them to where they've seen more hogs on the cameras. Crazy in 15 years, it's gone from no hogs to having multiple traps on the property to get rid of them. I don't know how much it's changed the hunting, since I rarely sit in a stand, but they still shoot deer (although you will always here everyone complain they aren't seeing enough, but that's always been the case). Just crazy how it went from 0 to seeing them every time you put out a camera.

not sure if OP is serious...

deer meat>pig meat
damage caused by pigs >>> damage caused by deer
cleaning a deer > cleaning a pig
deer mount > pig mount

bout the only thing i can think of that pigs have on deer is that it's nice that you can go out year round with an AR and light up a field full of pigs... can't really do that with deer

dare i say, pigs are trashy?

I have both on my land. I invite guys to come out and hunt, and they always kill something.
My buddies run their dogs in and catch the hogs at night.
But I must say, Granny's homemade bbq with the wild hog meat is delicious.
