I just picked up a SLX DC ($190) and been playing around with it in my pond. That reel is incredible. I can cast anything no matter how light it is at least 15-20yds. I was throwing swim baits on a 1/8oz jig 20yds no problem. Throwing mirrolure she pup topwater 30+ yards. And throwing a medium sized spoon (forgot the weight) 50 yards like it was nothing. Depending on the setting you put the DC controls on it makes it litteraly impossible to back lash or bird's nest without using your thumb at all. I can throw a swim baits straight upwards into a 15mph wind and the spool will never do more than 4inches of backspooling. I was absolutely blown away, I was fishing a brand new curado k ($180) all weekend in PAC, and while it was super smooth, it is trash compared to that slx DC. The curado k definitely has a better build quality although bother are top notch. If y'all are looking for a great sub $200 dollar saltwater grade baitcaster that SLX DC is my favorite reel I own by far.

So the way Shimano's DC reels work is you have a SEALED Digitally Controlled (the DC in its name) braking system. A computer chip monitors the tension on your spool thousands of times per second and depending on which setting (1-4, 4 being the highest braking setting 1 being the lowest) it will apply brakes to the spool to match the rate of line deceleration even if you have a ultralight or weightless bait. This prevents you from having to thumb your spool for basically any reason. Even if you don't tap the spool before your bait lands, at worse you will get 2-3 revolutions of back spooling. I can take a 1oz bait with the spool tension all the way open and slam it into the water as hard as I can without touching the spool and it won't even backlash, let alone bird's nest. The spool can't runaway because the computer will not let it, you can throw straight into wind and it doesn't care. But the best thing of all, even if you are great at preventing birds nest and backlash, it will add 5-15yds of casting distance to any bait because the computer is better than you are. Not only that but you don't have to switch to a spinning reel when throwing ultralight or weightless rigs. There are three new Shimano DC reels. The SLX DC ($190) and Curado DC ($250) are saltwater rated. And the Metanium DC ($500) which is freshwater only but it also has a higher end DC processor with 5 braking settings instead of 4.

Also if you care to look the Shimano SLX DC won best of iCast 2019, and the Shimano Curado DC won best of iCast 2018. The SLX DC also has a perfect 5/5 rating on literally every site I have looked at, literally hundreds of perfect reviews.

Ok, now I'm VERY interested. I was looking at dropping ~$130 on a Revo SX, but if I can get a non birdnesting super reel for $70 more...

So the difference in the 150 and 151 is the 150 is the reel size and the 0 and 1 is which side the reel is on. 150 has the reel on the right, 151 has the reel on the left. I only use left handed reels. So I bought the SLX DC 151HG

Watch some reviews of the SLX DC on YouTube and see if you like it. I have yet to find a review that dislikes the reel for anything other than aesthetics. I for one love it. I paired mine with the matching Shimano SLX rod in a 7' medium heavy power (rod feels like a Heavy power tbh), fast action. I hear the Revo sx is a really good reel, the regular Shimano SLX is $110 so in the same quality range as the Revo SX, the only difference is the DC breaking system for $80 more. Also remember the SLX is saltwater rated. And because it's breaking system you don't have to bring a spinning rod for ultralight baits, so it eliminates the need for a spinning rod if you like throwing light baits.

My local academy has it in lefty and righty. And bass pro/cabellas has only righties. Baton rouge area btw. I can only use lefties since I broke my right wrist/arm as a kid. Hurts too bad reeling all day long.

My son wants one of these really bad. He made a pile if cash (for a 14yr old) this weekend at his grandparents.

I was initially against it but I may back down and let him get it.

The functional difference between the SLX DC and the Curado DC is very little. Slightly higher build quality, colors, slightly larger line capacity, and higher tooth count on the reel gears. So basically it has more aluminum mainly the star drag, versus the slxs ultra Ridgid plastic. And slightly smoother reeling due to the gears, and more line. I didn't find it worth the $60 price increase over the SLX DC.

Looks like I bought the last Shimano SLX DC 151 in a 7.2.1 gear ratio in South Louisiana. If you wanna drive to the Seigen Lane Academy in baton rouge they have a SLX DC in lefty (151) in the 6.3.1 and 8.2.1 gear ratios if you are interested, or the Gretna Academy has only the 8.2.1 gear ratio SLX DC, I checked like every store and they are the only ones with lefty reels.

I looked up a review video and the moron doing the review set it to the fluorocarbon setting with mono on the spool and complained when it backlashed. And then was arguing with people in the comments when people were rightfully calling him a moron
