There's a few people around these parts who wish this was real

I am not a 1911 guy per se, but I did get two just to familiarize myself with the platform.
I did a decent bit of research, and decided to go with the Kimber Warrior and a Wilson Combat CQB.
I didn't want any Series II, Series 80, Schwartz safety mechanism in my 1911's.
They both shoot better than I do, especially the Wilson Combat.
Very accurate.
Very reliable.
Feels good in the hand.

I have a 3" kimber and have put thousands of rounds throughout it with not one problem. I carry it daily.

Me, or the professional trainer who has never seen one make it through a day of training without failing.

I'd be willing to bet more run properly than fail.

Same thing my BIL says about his.

The 3" is fine, I know several people who have put thousands of rounds through them with no problems.

My god father had one. It stovepiped a bit until he got it broken in. Runs flawless now.

I'm sure some have had problems, but I just haven't seen it in the several I've messed with.

Probably so. I do practice magic in my freetime.

You're willing to bet what? That a higher percentage of this type of gun is reliable than not? That's damning with faint praise if I've ever heard it.
But anyway, whether or not you know who Rob Pincus is, he wouldn't throw that out there if it wasn't true in his experience, and he has more experience than you unless you are some kind of guru.
This Michael Bane blogpost goes into further detail and is informative.
little 1911s
quote:
About small 1911s, I don't think John Browning would approve. The shorter slide guns (that is, shorter than Commander length) I believe compromise the basic operating integrity of the pistol...that is, there is insufficient mass in the slide for the gun to work as Browning intended. We try to make up for that insufficient mass by juggling the recoil spring weight or going to some sort of multi-spring system.
quote:
Generally, the recoil spring life in a short slide 1911 pistol is short and brutish...more to the point, when the springs fail, there's very little warning...the gun just stops working. An unpleasant surprise in a class...worse if you badly need that one more shot in the Real World.

Can the high and mighty Mr. Pincus explain why mine has never failed on me or am I full of shite and have tricked myself into believing that?

b-rab2,
One other thing to think about re: different sizes of 1911's is how they carry/feel to you, the shooter. I have a Commander 1911 w/ a 4 1/4" barrel as well as an Officer 1911 w/ a 3 1/2" barrel. There's not that much, if any, difference in how the two carry. Weight is about the same, as well. OTOH, I can shoot the Commander much better. It seems to balance and point naturally better for me than does the Officer's model. It'd really be good for you if you could have the opportunity to handle/shoot the two different sizes before buying one.
Plus, don't forget that the 3" 1911 is going to have 1 less round capacity in the mag than will a Commander or Government model.
What I'd really like to handle/carry would be an aluminum frame Commander sized 1911.
