I'm looking for campground recommendations for a solo tent camping trip over Memorial Day weekend in the Ozarks. Ideally I'm looking for a place that has easy access to great trails for hiking and trail running. Also, this will be my first solo trip, so a list of must haves for camping in that area would be beneficial as well.

Amped at Kyle’s Landing near Jasper this past October. Plenty of hiking trails and place to fish within walking distance from the camp ground. Five miles from Jasper. Get there early. The camp fills up pretty quick.

Better make sure you have some very good and effective tick repellant.

Devils Den is my best recommendation. Absolutely beautiful and most unique experience as far as parks go. You’ll get the full Ozark experience. Many miles of trail, and caves to explore. They even have a pool and small restaurant that makes awesome burgers.

Fossil Flats Campground

ETA if camping and canoeing is your idea you can’t go wrong with the Buffalo River up hwy 65 past Leslie. Massive river carved cliffs with great fishing. Canoe all day. Pull over and set up camp. I prefer the BR camping just because of the smallmouth fishing.

Really hard to beat the Buffalo River area. If you want something closer to LA, Albert Pike area is very solid. The Winding Stairs trail is super nice.

Petit Jean is my usual go to... they have everything there (massive water fall, really nice overlooks, tons of trails, Indian cave paintings, huge lodge with restaurant, etc)... it's pretty big and fairly popular, so it gets a bit busy during major holidays

I usually go once a year around Mardi Gras

Centerpoint trailhead down to the Buffalo, hit the Billy Goat Trail on the way down. There is access to network of trails from that trail head. Hike the Buffalo River trail to to Hemmend in Hollow towards Kyle's Landing, lot's of options for backpacking, or just day hiking out from a base camp on the river.

I do believe Arkansas is the tick capital of the United States. IF you've never heard of or know about "seed" ticks, you'll find out soon enough in Arkansas, too.

They are horrible in the Ozarks but a cost of the beauty here. Late May/early June is usually the worst time of the year. There is no repelling them, period. Once you get to the drier weeks in late July, they get much more rare until October.

We wear compression tights tucked into socks, undershirts tucked into tights, and over clothes. Tick checks every hour.

Near the Buffalo, the bamboo grass close to the river is full of them, but the higher ridges aren’t too bad.

Got covered in these suckers one summer working in an over grown hay field. It’s a new experience standing naked in the yard at your GF’s house hosing off with a water hose

This is not true. If you put a little Powder Sulphur around your waist [in your underwear band] and a little in your socks..... you won't be bothered by ticks and red bugs.

I did this as a kid and never remember having a problem. It is cheap and sold at Walmart or drug stores.

I went to Camp Orr twice and got infections from tick bites both times. Should have learned after the first time I burned a tick off.

That being said, I would go back in a heart beat. There's a cool cliff jumping spot not far from Kyle's landing that we had a lot of unsanctioned fun at.

Second this. It kills them on contact with your clothing
