Does anyone have some information that may help me out here? I live just west of Lafayette which is technically Duson and I'm looking at installing a privacy fence myself. First I plan on talking to my neighbors to make sure the location of the fence is satisfactory with them but I just plan on replacing a chain link fence with a wood fence basically in the same spot. Do you need a building permit for a certain height? I want to do an 8' fence but I've read for Lafayette you need a permit above 7'. I live on a corner lot so does it have to be so many feet from the road? Any other advice? Thanks.

I guess I basically want to know if I can put up an 8' fence without a permit and on the open sides of the corner lot I'd like to move the location a little bit closer to the road.

Very likely you have servitudes on your property. You can build a fense on a servitude be aware it can be torn down at your expense.

It would be smart to get a surveyor to locate your property corners (if they aren't already located) would be the best thing to do for locating fense.

Not sure about needing a permit for hieght of fense. That would be dependent on your parish/town ordinances.

Thanks, I just wanted to get an extra foot or two in the backyard but doesn't sound like it's worth it.

Get a survey. Your neighbor now might be cool with it, but when he moves and the new neighbor realizes your fence is on his place, the $ spent on the survey will be well worth it.

In regard to height, most people can't tell 7' from 8' fence without a tape measure. Build it like you want.

Call 811 before you dig. They will come mark all underground obstructions. I would do it even if you're planning on using the same post locations.

Here, you have to have a permit for everything. Corner lots have to go to the city planning committee. It may be wise to check with the city before you do anything, otherwise they may force you to take it down.

I would recommend not using 4x4 posts and not going further than 6' with spacing. On my last fence, the post warping was the worst thing. I plan to build another and will use steel post. Another thing to think about is finding 8' pickets, I don't think they're available at the big box stores.

You might want to take a look at your restrictions. It might contain a clause or two about fences.

Use metal fence posts and not 4x4 wood posts.

Helped a buddy build an 8' fence in LC and I'm pretty sure he didn't pull any permits or anything of the like.

That being said I would definitely get it surveyed and after that build away, they'll never know it's over 7'

There should be metal rods buried that mark your property. Run some sting and use that as a guide.

I can't believe you misspelled "fence" 3 times.

Buy 7' boards and run a mud runner beneath them. You'll get the desired height and the boards won't be over 7'.
