No Glocks. I dislike them greatly.

Been looking for a compact pistol to carry, but can't fricking stand most of them because my pinky falls off the grip. Held an XD(M) compact with the extended magazine last night, and really, really like the way that it felt. I've shot a full size XD and liked it, but never an M or a compact.

Thinking about getting the .45...with the extended mag holds 13+1. Kinda concerned about bulkiness of it, and wondering if I need to look at single stacks only (compact 1911s) instead or something else.

Thoughts?

If you are already concerned with this go with the 1911 style CC's that Kimber and Springfield make if 45 is a must.

I own several XD's and one XDM...I have a 9mm XD sub-compact...I don't carry it very much because it is bulky.

A .45 double stack will be very bulky. Take a look at a Springfield with a 3" or 3.5" barrel

Beretta PX4 Storm has a compact. I held it yesterday at academy. Me wants the full size .40

Because the inside of my hand isn't rectangular.

I've shot 6 or 7 Glocks - multiple models, including different generations, and I've hated every single one. They just don't fit my hand.

ETA: I love 1911s, but the ones that I've handled have worthless slide releases (impossible for me to hit with my thumb) - is that something that's easy to change on some models, or do I need to look for one that has one that I like from the factory?

Be a man and cut it off. If it felt right in your hand-buy it.

I have the .45 service model. Great gun but loud as hell. If you shoot it without ear protection (i.e., not target practicing) it makes your ears hurt. I would recommend the .40. That's what my next one will be.

I hope I never have to shoot any firearm without ear protection.

I get what you're saying. I carry mine with me in the woods while scouting because we have hogs and I don't want to carry a bulky gun.

Went to Jim's and fondled a few things...really liked the Colt Defender that they had. May have to take a gamble on it and buy it without shooting it.

Extremely easy. You have to remove the slide release to break it down.

Have an XD 9mm and its bulky as hell so if your concerned about it then definitely want to go with a single stack. Thinking about trading my XD in for a Ruger LC9

Extended slide release is readily available for a 1911.

I've taken to using the thumb on my left hand though. You've already removed your left hand from the gun to swap the magazine. Just pop the release as you re-establish your supporting grip. There's no rule that you have to use your right thumb.

Edit: and to address the OP... I don't have any experience with XDM compact. Sorry.

If you're going to use the gun for concealed carry, the Defender or a 3-3.5" 1911 would probably be best. OTOH, my 4.25" 1911 Commander style gun's not a problem to conceal. Often, the gun's grip length is causes the gun to print. The long grip of the XD will probably be harder to conceal than an Officer's style (3.0-3.5" barrel) 1911.

The 1911 makes a fine carry gun, either concealed or open, if one is willing to learn how to use it. Compared to a number of other autos, especially double stack mag autos, it's relatively thin. This is a VERY nice feature for concealed carry. The first gun I bought for cc was a Springfield XD in 40 S&W. I've found it less comfortable due to it's thickness. Now my main carry guns are Kel-Tec PF9, American Classic Commander (1911 w/ 4.25" barrel and STEEL frame) and a Citadel Concealed Carry (1911 w/ 3.5" barrel and steel frame). I like my 3.5" 1911, but concealing the 4.25" model is not a problem, either. I just didn't like the looks of the 3" models. I've also read many say reliability problems w/ the 1911 go up as the guns get smaller. I've had no problems w/ either of mine, but I keep that in mind, nevertheless. My 3.5" has rather snappy recoil, and that's w/ a steel frame. I bet a 3" barreled ALLOY frame 45 (like the Defender) would get one's attention. Personally, if choosing between an alloy 3" vs 4" 1911, I'd lean towards the latter.
