The trick to not freezing your arse off is in your boots, hands, cap, and a good fleece neck gaiter. Keep your extremities warm and your body will be fine with most jackets/pants on the market

That...and hunt where 40 degrees and no wind is considered frigid right? Sorry but this advice is not very accurate and could get someone hurt if they hunt somewhere other than 200 yards from a truck in optimal warm southern conditions.

With all Academy gear, you can be warm and safe in any north america climate........

I am not saying Sitka and others arent awesome, but it is not "needed" to be comfortable in cold weather

This. It's just that the new trend is Sitka gear and a Drake logo on the back glass of your jacked up 4x4.

Rivers West Frontier Jacket and pants. And yes you want to layer so you can hunt in 60 degrees and down to 10, which I've done several times in this gear. You can sit down in water and not get wet ever, plus it quiet. $109 each.

Jesus Christ. Buying Sitka has become a matter of life and death? I’m not telling anyone to wander off into the Rockies with nothing but a T-shirt and a gaiter. I’m simply pointing out that most people over look things like covering their neck, and wear boots that are way too tight. The little things can go a lot further than a 400 jacket.

You have no idea where or how I hunt, so quit trying to be a hardass.

I don’t wear jackets often. Tomorrow I’m wearing a merino wool shirt and packing a wool sweater over a fleece shirt for when I stop moving.

There is no way in hell that I could have done that in Academy clothing. The time and money I invested into that trip would be lost if I had to go back to the house and lose two days waiting for temps to come up.

Sure there is. If you know what you are doing, its not difficult to layer and keep warm, even with cheaper clothing.

Sitka gear is unnecessary for 99% of hunters. By all means, spend your money how you want, but you don't need Sitka gear to stay warm.

Even then most of the time if you really needed the cold weather gear like that you could save money buying better quality stuff from mountaineering companies in brown and green and call it a day.

Does Sitka have some new material that no one else has? I’ve stuck with Goretex since it came out. Silk base layer, UA cold gear layer, fleece layer and the jacket and I’ve hunted in single digits for hours. As someone else mentioned, i too take care of my feet and hands, my feet get cold and I’m done. Maybe I can sell a kidney for a pair of Sitka socks and gloves.

Lots of those jackets make noise. I'd say most do.

Eta...that posts I see now refers to layers as well. If that's what you were referring to I agree. That's what I do.

Brands like Mountain Hardware, Marmot, Arcteryx (or however the f it’s spelled), REI has some decent stuff at good prices, there’s quite a few others. even brands like north face were originally made for mountain climbing and camping
