So I'm visiting my grandfather's homeland of norway. He emigrated to nola in the early 30s. Anyway his brother days he wants to give me something. He says my grandfather sent him this fishing rod from nola. He goes into the attic and pulls out this beauty still nib. Anyone know anything about the company or the rod? The sticker says Kyoto Japan btw.

That rod is awesome. I bet it is bamboo but I suppose it could be wood. Bamboo was the material of choice for a long time (and still is in some fly fishing circle).

The best I can tell it's a bamboo saltwater rod probably made in the 60s. There's little to no info about this brand online though there's a few random pics of similar rods. Doesn't seem like it's especially valuable but still a really cool thing to have considering the connection to your grandad and the great condition it's in.

Absolutely, not interested in value. It's going on my office wall. Just trying to learn more.
Thanks

Kind of a funny footnote, I looked and looked for a fishing rod company named Foster in New Orleans...

What I found is that Foster Corporation has been making custom tarps in New Orleans since the 20's, meaning that was likely the original box your grandad used to ship the rod overseas.

Ahhh, I was beginning to think the same thing, especially since the sticker says Kyoto japan! Great catch.

Right choice IMHO, I think I would try and find a nice period correct reel to mount on it. Would be a treasure for years to come.

Maybe Jimmy at Professional on Julia St. could tell you something about it?

Yep, split bamboo. Very good flex to them is why they make it out of split bamboo. Some of the best high dollar rods on the market are bamboo.

I have old bamboo flyrod.
I do hang it in my office and on occasion go bream fishing with it.
Love the slow action and very beautiful to look at hanging in the office.
