I’ve only been 3 times. We targeted the endangered red snapper and ling and dolphin.
I’m going to take the FILs boat out this year(with a friend who goes often) and was interested to know what other species are common out there and what kind of gear used to chase it.

Is there any fishing groups that give info or teach tactics through videos?

I have one locally that's a wealth of info.

Amberjack, triggerfish...

We used to go out of there, but higher gas prices and lower fish limits shut us down years ago. It's quite the run compared to SELA to get to deep water from Cameron.

Mangrove snapper as well as what you’ve mentioned. Also fun to troll for kings. Use fluorocarbon leaders for the mangroves. How far out y’all going? Used to go out of Grand Chenier a lot

To the first or second set of rigs. Not any further than that.

Johnson Bayou rigs is good for trout and Spanish mackerel. Caught a few triple tail around the buoys out of the ship channel. Never saw snapper in that close. We would usually start fishing about 50 mi out depending on the water and would usually have to go further out.

We always went out of Sabine Pass. The short rigs are just to the left from there and loaded with trout at certain times of the year. That's all pretty much the Sabine Bank so it's pretty shallow for quite a ways. Most nearshore species are there. Trolling the tidelines can get you hooked up with a wide variety of fish. Most structure oriented species can be found at the rigs. The whole bank is very good fishing if you don't hit one of the dead zones. Smacks and kings galore in the summer.

So like 24' deep? We call those the "short rigs" and catch trout, bull reds, jack crevalle and stuff like that around them. I don't know if any keeper snapper or AJ hang out that shallow.

We fish them alot too. Get real good in late Summer. Usually end up having to go towards Sabine Pass once everyone starts beating them up good out of Cameron.

I thought the OP meant like real offshore towards blue water. Certainly doable, just a haul.

Use to have a camp out of Hlooly Beach before Rita. The runs were to far compared to going out of Venice or Grand Isle.

You're not going to catch any of that at the first sets of rigs out of Cameron. Muddy and shallow water.

All depends on how far you run. Like another poster said...usually have to run far out of Cameron, so fuel is an issue.
