Saw the jacks busting up some mullet yesterday and went and grabbed my rod. He did not want to come to shore. Awesome fight!

I've only caught one and it was out of Venice. Best fight I've had with a fish.

People travel across the world to fish for trevally (Jack species but bigger) on a fly rod.

In the summer you can tie into some of these donks and bull reds on a fly rod for the cheap.

Jacks are an overlooked species but are freight trains on the end of a line.

Sportfish only, not for dinner, correct?

People don't eat them unless its a necessity. Plenty of better tasting fish swimming around. If you cut out the blood line and soak it in Italian dressing for a good period of time I imagine itd be ok on the grill.

Years ago back at the dock at Delacroix some kid was all excited because he thought his Jack was a tuna. Felt bad bursting his bubble.

They're fun to fight. For eating. Bleed them immediately, if you can, filet them too.

Do that and it's a good tasting fish.

Curious to know where you caught it. I've been waiting for the Jacks to come into Pontchartrain this year so I can try to hook up with one. I had not heard reports of any showing up yet. Is this the first report?

i've only caught two jacks in my life and they were great fights. the bigger one was at cat island so i thought i had a 6' shark or something.

what is their seasonal migration pattern? similar to reds?

You can find schools of jacks in the lake between July 4th to Septemberish.

I am new to them myself as well but put it on the fishing bucket list for this year, from the kayak of course.

My son tied into on a couple of weeks ago in Timbalier bay off of Philo Brice Island. Had a hell of a time getting him in with 12 lb test and a size 30 spinning reel. Took him about 30 minutes to get him close to the boat then another 10 or so to get him in the net.
There were multiple schools busting the surface after pogies.

This was near the twinspans in Slidell. I saw 20-30 of them today and saw a few near lakeshore earlier this week. So they're most certainly here. I saw a few today a good bit bigger than the one pictured above. Good luck

My parents took my aunt and uncle out several years ago in MS sound north of Dauphin Island.

My mom called me absolutely ecstatic that my aunt had caught a yellow fin tuna. I told her to tell me where she caught it and what it looked like. This was before cameras on phones.

They were all extremely disappointed to learn that their tuna was actually a jack.

And I've caught bunches of them on Dixey Bar. Crazy how hard they pull.
