Newer portable boat gas tanks

Finally got me a little messing around boat with a portable tiller motor. I went and got a 6 gallon red poly fuel tank. Go fill it up and do my oil mixing and take the boat out for a spin. Then I took off the fuel tank and stored it out of the sun but still outside under the barn lean to.
Yesterday I think I'll go take the boat out so I go around the side to grab the tank and it looks like a friggin balloon. I mean the nice little rectangle tank is now damn near round. So I relieved the pressure thinking I had done something wrong. I left the top cracked a little to keep it from expanding so much but shouldn't there be some sort of air relief on these? I can't imagine it's safe to have that much volatile air built up like that. Anyone else experience this?

New tanks suck arse and can lead to engine issues in some motors due to the lack of venting. If you can run it and store it with the cap unscrewed a bit or better yet find an old cap with the screw open/close vent

I have one of these also. they don't make them like they use too. I keep my cap not off but unscrewed. this I find is the only way to stop it from looking like a balloon. An keep it out of the sun. Lastly If you have that grey fuel hose. Throw that crap away. These hoses have a plastic liner in it and in a few months it will collapse. THIS WILL HAPPEN. Go to the auto parts store and buy you 3/8 black fuel hose. You will never have a prolblem again. LINK

Mine does the same thing. But its right there under my carport, so I usually open the cap of the tank once every other day or so to relieve the stress. Its annoying though, because the tank is no longer square, so it wobbles a bit in the boat. I have a new tank that came with my new motor, but I havent replaced the old one with it yet. I'm waiting until I'm fed up with the old one before I replace it.

Congrats on the boat. I’m sure you know, but ethanol-free gas is a must, especially in those little tanks. Keeping the cap loose to let it vent will help your tank, but it will also let moisture in. Moisture + ethanol gas = water in the bottom of the tank, right at the fuel pickup.

Pics of boat, bro! This is sorta like the OT where when you mention a woman there, you have to provide a pic, here, while we do enjoy a beautiful woman, if you mention your new boat, you must post a pic!

Drill a hole in the cap and buy a drain valve for a compressor (Lowe’s has them) screw it in and you can crack it open

I drilled a hole in mine. Cut out some plastic off a jug. And made a false bottom on the cap. Works fine. I was at the gas station when I HAD to do this.

Seems like if you have a check valve with a hose barb on output side you could drill a hole screw it into your tank and route the hose line to a protected place so you wouldn't get water in your tank.

I'm no expert but this seems to be a no-no unless it is USCG approved.

Not sure what your point is. Care to chime in? Im just trying to point the man in the right direction.

My opinion is to not vent it at all and let it warp, better than letting all the moisture get in.

Had this exact issue with my gator tail. Pressure was so high it was pushing fuel into the oil. I ended up putting a fuel shut off switch inline to prevent that.
