Im looking to get my dad a new semi auto shotgun this year for Christmas. Are there any gun shops near Baton Rouge that let you try before you buy? I want to make sure I get something that shoulders just right.

Or should I just get the gun with the most adjustments/shims?

ETA: rough 1k budget. Semi Auto 12 Gauge. Mostly duck hunting and some turkey hunting. Not many light target loads.

how much are you wanting to spend?

Semi-auto or pump or O/U?

50 replies minimum...only because when this topic comes up occasionally on the OB, you realize there's as many opinions on this topic as there are posters looking at the thread any given day. Shotgun budgets, fit, and features are personal for everyone. Everyone has their favorites and reasons within any budget...whats your budget? Will it be for clays, upland, ducks, squirrel, or all-rounder?

If you are actually wanting a fitted shotgun you should take him to an Orvis or Beretta store for a proper fitting. We are talking multiple thousands of dollars, not Remington 870 money.

ETA: 1k is not going to get you far in the shotgun world sorry to say. One option I would recommend is getting him a nice Yildiz over and under from Academy, you can get their top tier gun for around $700 and it is very nice. You can use the rest of the budget to get him a couple rounds of sporting clays or a range membership for the year, or a couple cases of shells.

I can't think of any semi's that have adjustable stock/shims until you get up in price.

Benelli SBE2, SBE3, Super Vinci. Ethos
Beretta A400
Browning A5

I'm pretty certain there are others just can't think of them.

Just bring a bucket full of sand and tell them you know what the hell you're doing.

I dont think you can go wrong with any of these . I shoot a Beretta al 391 its about 10 years old but its light and easy to swing.

I think the Winchester SX3 is a great option that fits your criteria

Beretta A300 and A350 both come with multiple shims and fit your criteria.

The a300 does and can be had for well under 1k.

If I had a son, I couldn’t think of a better way for him to honor me than gifting me a Krieghoff K80.

Of course they let you try before you buy.
Just bring a 5 gallon bucket full of gravel and you can shoot all day in the store.

Dang beat me to it.

SBE2, Pretty sure I spent $1100 a few years ago. Can get shims to adjust which are easy to add.

I really enjoy my Benelli Montefeltro 12 gauge, and it's in your price range. Sweet shooter, versatile, and not heavy at all.
