I like the season because it affords me two extra weeks of hunting opportunities, but I agree with Da Hammer, there is nothing "primitive" about my scoped .444 Marlin.
If they did go back to strictly primitive, that would give me a reason to shoot flintlocks and other actual primitive firearms, so I somewhat wish they would.

A muzzleloader is legal in primitive season. An Encore with a muzzle-loaded barrel is still a muzzleloader.
In addition to muzzleloader, they allow single shot, breach loading rifles designed prior to 1900 that shoot a bullet of .44 caliber or higher (which now I see it has changed). An Encore with a 45-70 is not a pre-1900 designed weapon.
That is my interpretation anyway.

Got one in my safe that is late 1800's Winchester lever action. Does it have to be single shot? I currently use a .45-70, but would be happy if i could use that old .38-40.

You're pretty much correct but the year Missippi legalized the Encore I was told by some guys with LDWF that they'd be legal in Louisiana soon. I own one and just want the opportunity to use it if I choose but last year I only used my bow even during firearms season.
Maybe I'm just looking for a reason to buy a new barrel for it.

I think so
quote:
1. Rifles or pistols, .44 caliber minimum, or shotguns 10 gauge or smaller, all of which must load exclusively from the muzzle or cap and ball cylinder, use black powder or approved substitute only, take ball or bullet projectile only, including saboted bullets, including primitive firearms known as “in line” primitive firearms, and

2. Single shot, breech loading rifles, .38 caliber or larger of a kind or type manufactured prior to 1900 and replicas, reproductions or reintroductions of that type rifle having an exposed hammer that use metallic cartridges loaded either with black powder or modern smokeless powder. All of the above may be fitted with magnified scopes.

If the point is to somewhat limit the effectiveness of firearms yet, not make it such a specialized sport as to discourage people from participating, they should just outlaw optics.
Have a seaons where optics are not allowed. You can hunt with whatever you want, but it has to be with open sights.

I'd like that too. I have a badass Winchester 30/30 with iron sights.

I no longer see the point of a primitive season.

How much pull do you think gun makers have in this debate?
I'm normally not a conspiracy person, but these "primitive" seasons make you think about it.

Makes you wonder. How much do you think New England Firearms/Harrington & Richardson made in the past 7-8 years on Handi Rifles?
Hornady probably did better than well on its LeveRevolution ammo too.
