Would anyone here be against banning urine based products? It seems they are a focus of wildlife agencies.

if research shows that it has legit potential to spread CWD i'm fine with it.
seems like there are a lot of other risks they could go after before that, though. i guess they have to do what they can with the amount of public outrage over any efforts to rein in CWD.

I wouldn't kill any more or less deer without deer piss

I'd save about 35 dollars a year not talking myself into thinking I need it.

Im no expert, but it seems that the baiting industry has 0 standards or testing. So some of these bait companies could be manufacturing their products from deer infected with CWD.
It seems like the biologists still dont know what causes it. Not knocking them, nature is cruel.

I'm a little confused.
One on hand, there's changes listed in that article that would relax antler restrictions in some areas and lengthen modern firearm seasons...which should increase the number of deer being shot and thin the herd to reduce spread of CWD.
But at the very end, they talk about adding antler restrictions in CWD core zone. Wouldn't that have the opposite effect? Antler restrictions = less deer shot = higher population density = increased chances of CWD transmission
Am I looking at this wrong?

Same here. Been skunked with using deer piss. I can't possibly do any worse without it.

seems kind of weird to me as well. I remember reading somewhere that younger bucks are most likely to spread CWD since they may get booted from area to area by the older bucks. I think it was Doug Duren who said that and started shooting just about anything with horns on his farm once CWD was found there.

seems like it's a test case thing. Reduce the antler restrictions in most places while keeping them the same in those 5 counties.
Review the data years later and see what happened
maybe

i know quite a few people who take this to mean that we shouldn't be worried about it since "these so called scientists don't even know how it spreads"

yup, it damn sure ain't a disney movie. I'd prefer management agencies to err on the side of caution.

err on side of caution wish baiting would he banned also
would help with our turkeys also I believe the corn feeders are negatively affecting our turkeys with aflatoxins

In all fairness, there are populations of deer and elk that have had CWD for over 20 years and haven't declined. The scientists themselves admit they're doing it out of caution and don't fully understand how it actually impacts populations. There's a fair amount of sensationalism involved.

Deer mortality isn't the primary thing they are worried about stopping. If somehow CWD makes the jump to humans then there ain't any telling what happens to hunting. I know, it's a stretch that it could jump but it's still concerning to me.

That's probably the most sensationalized part. The results of testing have made for great headlines but digging a little deeper shows there's very little risk to humans.

i think they have managed to give it to some monkeys and then a certain strain infected a lab mouse that has similar prion structure to humans.

At the last LDWF Commission meeting I watched online they had a presentation from the state vet on deer urine lures and CWD spread. He didn't lean one way or another just provided facts and preached caution but most of the commissioners seemed like they wanted to ban deer urine right then and there.

They were able to infect a certain species of squirrel monkey, first by injecting it directly into their spinal column, and then by feeding them highly concentrated brain tissue of mule deer.
They tried to do the same with macaques, which are closer up the ladder to humans, and none were infected. The study concluded that the risk of human transmission is very low, but that advised it's still sensible not to eat deer brain just out of common sense.
The headline became, "scientists find monkeys can get CWD, warn not to eat deer."

That part isn't included in article headlines where it says "It was transferred!".
No more baiting allowed in the county I hunt, but I'm perfectly ok with that. As far as the urine, I haven't used any since I was a teenager and trying everything out. We do have to abide by a few new rules that will make things a little more difficult, but I'm ok with a little extra precaution as well.

Again, in all fairness, it's worth researching and the same institute is still looking into feeding macaques infected meat versus the spinal injections, but their results have been inconsistent and they haven't published yet. Last year I think they claimed to have a few infected but then said the paper wasn't gonna be ready for a few more years.
