Just bought an older home on a nice size piece of land and have a few questions. Answer the ones you may be have some knowledge on.
1. Lots of wasps, dirt (mud) dobbers, and wood bees. Any recommendations on how to get rid of these in bulk or each specifically?
2. Electric dog fence going in tomorrow. Best YouTube trainers for this or pieces of advice?
3. Wood rot at the the bottom of the cabinets near refrigerator and floor very soft. Pull up floors and try to fix it before it spreads?
4. Dog is going to end up sleeping outside when fence goes in. Never had an outside dog before, but do they not get torn up by mosquitoes at night?

That’s all I got for now. Maybe will think of more as we go on.

Bifen-IT
Compare and save brand seemed to be cheapest last time I purchased on Amazon. Tractor supply also has it.

Get a sprayer and spray this everywhere, can use indoors also.

You’ll have so many more questions lol!

Get some raid wasp spray and go to town. Then sign a contract with a pest company and have them do snake spray too.

Hang up the mosquito and snake danglers all around the yard and especially where your dog sleeps. He will be fine living outside, they’ve lived outside more than inside

I’d make sure to cut the entire room’s floors out and then make sure you don’t have a leak of moisture in that room. Better to do it now than later.

Cut out the floor, work everything, check all the beams under.

Yes, keep them on a very good heart worm preventative.

You have or had a water leak. Probably from the ice maker line or sink plumbing. Make sure it's not still leaking before starting the floor repair.

1) wasp spray, then water hose and scrub brush, or pressure washer
2) don’t know. Should be easy to DIY
3) before I pulled up everything I would cut out all the water damaged wood you can see and then make an assessment of how much more you need to remove.
4) yes, they will get tormented by mosquitoes. How do you think you would do sleeping outside unprotected? Of course some areas are much worse than others, but even if they’re not terrible, it can be very uncomfortable for them. Without a heartworm preventative it is a death sentence.
By the way, do not use HeartGuard. It does not prevent your dog from getting heart worms.

By the way, congratulations! Sounds like a great experience.

Any chance of keeping the dog inside? Bifen inside and out will help big time with wasps, fleas, ants...

Yes. Inside is way better. Or even a screen porch.

I could go all day on this one.

We bought 20 acres with an older house on it last July. Best advice I can give you.

You will not get it all done. Not any time soon. Get that in your head and you'll be fine.

By the time you do x, y needs doing again or z broke.

If the property hasn't been that kept up with expect a nightmare getting started. It was weeks before I had grass and weed eating under control while trying to move.

When you buy wasp spray, buy 6 cans and some ant spray too. Get some off with deet until you can get things under control.

Round up is your friend, weed eating for 4 hours sucks.

We bought from an older couple that worked nightshift so a lot of stuff wasn't used daily in the house. The week we moved in 14 light bulbs burnt out. A ceiling fan went out. Screen door broke.

We've also replaced the well water bladder and filter, an a/c unit, electrical panel, several electrical outlets and switches. And 2 more fans went out

Talstar has been keeping the bugs in check for me but it's a lot of spraying. I mix 5 gallons, start at the house and keep working my way out. Usually spray 10-15 gallons.

2) not sure if you are doing it or a company is...but make sure they put flags on the perimeter and set the collar sensitivity to beep before you get close to the fence (and at the fence it will shock them)

We have dumb dogs and smart dogs but they all are scared of the fence line.

no need for the flags after a few months.

After they associate flags with beep, you can put flags anywhere you want (couches, doorways) and they will never go close to them.

All of our dogs will not cross cords/rope/etc/other extended barriers in other settings because they are terrified of the electric fence model.

I never thought it would work but it solidly works.

make sure doggos get the heartworm/tick combo and have a cool den/house to sleep in.

If he/she has been an inside dog before now, get ready to replace a few doors and you will need some noise canceling headphones.

Sure they do but they’re dogs. What do you think happens to all other outdoor dwelling canines? If you really are worried about them, build them a small shed (dog house) you can lock them in at night. I put Mine in the utility room at night so they don’t bark. They’d be woofing all night around here with all the critters I have running around.

As for the electric fence, put flags or other markers up on the perimeter so the dogs associate the visual barrier with the shock. Make them hit the fence a few times to figure it out. Once they learn it they’ll respect it. I’m very pleased with my fence. Keep fresh batteries in the collars, tho.

If you’re going to have an outside dog get another dog, most of them are social critters. Unless it’s a working dog I don’t see the point of a solo outside dog unless you happen to work outside all day.
