New boat owner questions

This is my first time owning my own boat, and I have a few questions that hopefully yall can help me with. Thanks in advance.
1) I am gonna get a VHF for it, most probably ICOM M330. Just don't feel comfortable riding around w/o one. My fish finder/GPS already has a GPS unit with it. Is it worth the extra $50 to get the one with the built-in GPS, or would connecting it to my current GPS work fine?
2) It's only a 17.5ft boat. I don't really want an 8ft fiberglass antenna, so I am looking at something like this as an alternative. Is a 3ft antenna mounted to the console good enough for like 10 miles?
3) It has a jackplate. Wtf is this thing for? I've always just slowed down and trimmed up the motor when it gets shallow
4) Motor was replaced, but throttle wasn't. The guy gave me the new throttle and cables. Original one was an Evinrude, and new one is Evinrude. Are old and new cables the same? I can't imagine much has changed. Should it just be a direct swap?
5) Only one bilge pump. Is it worth it to install a redundant one?

1) built in GPS = don’t have to deal with tiny NMEA 0183 wires and you have a backup GPS. Register a MMSI number and program it in to the VHF. If you press the distress button, it will relay your coordinates.
2) probably. I have a standard horizon GX2200 with 3ft antenna and always “DSC test call” the coast guard. As long as I’m somewhat out in the open, I can always ping a tower.
3) raise motor without suffering the consequences of trimming out. Can better find the sweet spot of where your boat wants to run in different conditions.

Could be speed, could be efficiency, could be better ride. Generally the less lower unit you have in the water, the more efficient you’ll be...right up until your prop cavitates.
At any rate, you can lift your skeg 6” while keeping your prop shaft more or less parallel to waterline, with the ability to slow down and trim out from there.

Good question. The standard answer is that VHF is "line of sight" radio. So if you are trying to talk to someone 10 miles away, who has an antenna on top of a high tower, you should be ok. If the only person within 10 miles of you is another 17ft boat with a 3ft antenna, then probably not. Depending on where you are boating, you may or may not have someone to talk to.

Your range should be +\- 1.23 * (sq root of h1 + sq root of h2). Where h1 and 2 are antenna heights.
So if you assume your 3 foot whip is about 6’ above ground level and receiving antenna is same height, range would be +\- 6 miles.

Sounds good. I just don't want to get somewhere that I need it, and then can't reach anyone. I don't know many bodies of water where I'd be that someone wouldn't be closer than that

Well, I get to have some fun tonight. My buddy asked me what I was doing, I'm assuming he wanted to go drink some beers.
This was my reply:
That's with two harnesses and the second battery removed. Seems like a blind 13yr old wired this thing up. Whoever did this had to try and make it that bad. Wires are run through harnesses, then spliced, then looped around the other side of the harness.
Ran the boat for about two hours straight yesterday (50/50 idling and >4000rpm). Ran perfect until the last long idle. Started knocking. Sounded like low octane fuel knock. As soon as it got above 1000rpm, the knock stopped. Came off plane, and the engine just shut off. Didn't misfire or bog down, it just shut off. Couldn't get it started again, but it would crank. Sounded like a fuel problem.
Came home, changed plugs and fuel/water separator. One side's plugs had a lot of carbon on them. Took a lot, but I got it running again. Once I get this wiring straightened out, I'm gonna run it and hope for the best

5. Bilge pumps are not that expensive nor are they difficult to install. You want a VHF for piece of mind means should you should also get an additional pump too.

Is that by the transom or in a forward console? One of the best thing we added to our boat was a battery switch that keep electronics from draining the battery if they are left on or have a slight short.

We also have two blige pumps--one wired straight to the batteries and to the console switches so it pumps out any water that gets in the boat while parked or not in use and another that is only on a switch.

That's looking into the center console. I had to give up. It was too hard to see wire coloring in artificial light through all of the electrical tape
