I'm trying my hand at growing a bunch of watermelons this year. Anyone out there have any advice? Mainly, how do you plant? Do you start inside and transplant? If you plant seeds, how many do you plant at each mound, and how far to you spread your mounds out? So far, I've transplanted some that aren't looking so good due to the colder nights and all of this wind that is blowing right now. And I put some seeds in the ground. I just did 5 seeds per mound, every 6 feet. Thanks for any help.

Keep your stash of grape drink at least 100yds away from your watermelon patch.

Dumptruck load of dirt, don't spread it, throw watermelon seeds on it, don't do anything else until they are ready.

Seriously, I was bringing in dirt last summer to level our property, my old retired neighbor did this on a couple of piles of dirt and we made lots of great melons, zero maintenance. This wasn't even great soil, it came from a neighbor digging a pool.

I threw out watermelon seeds on top of a septic tank down in Orange Beach, AL.

Grew like kudzu and I had melons everywhere.

Watermelons don't do well in good soil in my experience. Black dirt from close to the river gives you some huge vines with shitty little melons on them.

I always start mine in cups and transplant. Two plants per hill about 6 to 8 feet between hills and staggered between rows. Use fertilizer with a high potash content. Best melons I ever grew was on land that we clear cut and burned. Keep the grass out of them for as long as you can and if you need to turn your vines, do it in the afternoon when they're not as firm. Good luck!

If you are planting anything else around them, make sure you you leave the watermelon plenty of room to roam..........and then leave them more. Every time we try to plant watermelon it takes over the whole garden

Beauregard Parish. Plowed up about a .5 acre of old pasture land. Pretty good dirt because of all of the hay that was fed out for years.

Yea, I'm about 20 miles from "Sugartown", and it seems like every sign on the side of the road for 300 miles is for "Sugartown Watermelons".

Just give my kids a watermelon and let them spit the seeds in the yard.

I can't stop the damn things from growing in the yard of my Texas house. Hell, I just got back from Alaska last week and found this...

This one was apparently the result of seeds spit out from a SugarBaby watermelon. I get all kinds...just a total luck of the draw what decides to grow.

The neighbors said the got watermelons from my yard all winter.

Wow, that is crazy. They're obviously easy to grow. Means there is more of a chance of me screwing them up.

Yeah, they're pretty easy to grow. I recommend cow manure.

I was born and raised in Beauregard Parish. Are you a penley? Anyway, we got the dirt for it, just give them lots of room and water
