I'm going to CO around xmas and I'm interested in a guided hunt for big game.

Has anyone done something similar?

I've just started getting info and thought this would be a good place to ask a few questions.

Doesn't have to be ML, but I have zero interest in shooting birds. I'm open to suggestions. This is a bucket list type thing, so I'm flexible on price (within reason).

I'm also open to hunts outside of CO.
I want a once in a lifetime hunt. No deer, no ducks.

Suggestions and recommendations would be much appreciated.

They are supposed to be excellent.

If you're open to Canada, I know a cat guide up there.

Little late in the year to start looking for a bucket list hunt.

I would recommend doing some research to understand what you want and look at next year if you truly want a hunt. Most western big game seasons are wrapping up around this time of the year with a few late season hunts for elk, deer and mountain lion. Of course if you have the money I am sure you can spend around $10-20k and get on a hunt or go the fenced preserve route.

I know you said no birds, but I really think your best bet would be a front range hunt in CO for pheasants. You don't have to plan ahead much and it would be a very fun hunt.

You can kill a cat year round in Oregon.

I could guide you on a bobcat hunt. Can you kill it with your bare hands is the question, though...

No.

I just want to hunt an apex predator.
I'm not stacking bodies, just one for my lifetime. For a mount.

Yeah, I'm open to Canada.
I have an old college roommate in Saskatchewan that's been trying to get me up there for years. Although I really have no idea where that is...

do what you want but if you want an apex predator go for a bear
in places they are legal it's a well managed population and it's a much fairer fight
definitely an accomplishment to take one safely

if you are really interested in shooting a mountain lion try getting in touch with some of the old ranchers in Tx Hill Country. Most wouldn't have a problem with your idea.
years ago when i hunted in that area one of us shot one and the old dudes that were native cheks/germans to the area came out of all the backwoods canyons to see it. all of them started pulling out wads of cash to offer (buddy wouldn't take it) as most are raising goats.
Tx pays a bounty on them.

lots of variables ... outfitter, unit, tags available, etc... Some outfitters book 1-2 yrs in advance. You better be in serious shape as dogs can chase the mtn lion 10-20 miles through seriously rugged county in the snow. Guide will be tracking the dogs via GPS collars. Dogs are followed in guides truck, but you still have to go find the cat once tree'd.

Not uncommon to spend 8-10 hours tracking the cat, and once you get there, the hunt has to be aborted because the cat doesn't have nuts. You can only shoot Toms. Also, hunts are usually booked for 7-10+ days because you will get snowed out and not be able to hunt during blizzard-like conditions

Texas does not pay a bounty.

What are these

backwoods canyons
you speak of in the Hill Country?

How long ago was this?
When Ranchers have a problem they take care of it. Landowners? I have not heard of Rancher in the Hill Country having a cat problem in a long, long time.

Got Blaze pretty much summed it up.

I did do a quick look at the cancelled hunts that are offered by the outfitting arm of Cabelas, they do have an available elk hunt for this December. LINK

It will be around 8.5K just for the hunt and license though. Not sure if this is an issue for you or not.

You can also look at the cat hunts they offer, from 5K up. There is a Colorado outfitter listed. But I would reiterate that they physical fitness level is listed as a 4, which is equivalent to sheep hunting shape.

Shoot it for the back straps. Considered some of the best meat there is.
