My old man found out he needed heart-valve replacement just before Christmas last year. He has a history of heart issues, but this had him pretty down. He and I have made several trips on bikes over the years, and I came up with a “challenge” to lift his spirits.

Budget is $3k. With this, you must purchase a motorcycle, make it legal (tt&l, insurance), and have enough gas money to go from central Texas to Mount Rushmore and back.

Tt&l and gas is going to eat up $400-$600. Dilemma becomes buying the best bike available for $2400, or a dog for cheap and fix it up.

Some of what’s available:

$2800 OBO

$350 (needs work)

$1400

Man that’s pretty cool. I’ve always wanted a Honda cbr but I’m pretty sure I would be disowned. Also I’m pretty positive I would kill my self.

In terms of reliability I would have to the a Kawasaki ninja 250 would be fine. Idk how much u ride bikes or anything but if not a regular bike rider I would be hesitant but definitely be itching to jump right into a 600

If he’s older I can’t imagine riding a crotch rocket that far.
Seems he would need something a bit more comfortable.

I think he’s looking for suggestions for him not his dad.

From a few local adds from Craigslist here

$1000

$2300

$1300 OBO

$1500

There were more but they looked to be scams, the reply phone number was another area code.

Here is a link to a Honda Shadow that a friend is selling on Craig's list. For that trip you would want something very dependable.

There is a low mile Honda 750 ACE sitting in my garage. Windshield. Saddle bags. Mustang seat. Would probably run great with a good scrubbing.

Do not buy a sportbike or Harley to ride to south Dakota.

Honestly, big red pig. Honda 650 dualsport.

I have riden several Harleys to SD with no issue, just make sure you buy a fuel injected bike but that would be out of the price range, anything since 06 should be a pretty reliable machine.

It would take a month to get there with a sportsbike, after 250 miles you would walk the rest of the way just not to have to get back on it.

great machine,

I would aim for a cruiser though, shadow, virago, vulcan, boulavard, intruder, etc, all great comfortable bikes you can pick up on the cheap.

I have a Suzuki Volusia with some extras (including Mustang seat) and low miles for sale. Rides great, bigger bike, but light weight with good mileage.

Let me know.

Dark blue, silver, and Black.

Some background - we’ve both built and raced super sports - gsxrs and cbrs. Most of our trips have been on “crotch rockets”. He’s 74 and we did a track day at COTA last November.

Cruisers seem like the way to go here - start in the heart of Texas, through middle America, to the home state of Sturgis - only seems appropriate.

Hunt is on -

Update: most everything on Craigslist under $2k is stolen, wrecked or a scam (shocking, I know).

Almost went with the Sv650 - good motor, plenty of parts - but came across this:

[/img]

1999 Victory V92c. Big American twin! 3400 miles. Guy bought it to piss off his wife while going through divorce and never rode it. Gas has turned, but tank is clean. Dropped it once and half-assed it back together. Work is on to get it running.

So far - $2200.

What year is the KLR? Indestructible unless it's a 2008.

“Crotch rockets” are deceptively comfortable on long trips. Tank bag to lie on - out of the wind - stop every 200 miles for gas.

Rode 1000 miles plus several times on my GSXRs.

I can vouch for this with the caveat that the bike needs to fit the rider. Never fit well on GSXRs but had an '05 R1 that I made many comfortable long trips on. Not 1,500 miles long but several hundred miles where we had to fill up a few times to get where we were going.
