The question is in the title. You guys that are private land owners, or members of camps, what is your best method to stop thieves, particularly in parishes or counties with ineffective law enforcement?

In Mississippi, there appears to be a growing problem, even in “good” counties, with property theft....ATVs, UTVs, tractors, and camp break-ins.

Is there any method to stop it short of a full-time, on-property caretaker?

Theft is happening, in this case, at night and during the day. I think short of full time caretaker, I’m not sure there is an answer.

unfortunately the only real answer is do not leave anything at the camp that you don't have too. I would love to leave the crappie boat, one of the four wheelers, tree stands, clothes etc but one break in and losing multiple stands was enough. Now its a load it up and haul it up and back every time. We do have some very good friends there who keep an eye on things as best they can but they aint always there at 3am when the meth head comes tweeking by. Of course I do leave the TV fridge bedding etc type stuff that just do not have room or to much hassle to haul but every time I expect to get there and the door be kicked in and the water heater and tv gone. Just the sad reality of owning a place 5 hours away. Should not be that way but we all know it is and is not getting better any time soon. We do keep cameras looking at the cabin from several angles all around it but when something happens again I doubt it will make much if any difference as far as recovering anything

It actually wouldn't do anything other than a pop and might scare them.

Realistically, about the only thing that you can do is notify the police and set up cameras and signs saying there are cameras.

I'd install a few dummies as well.

When it happens get the video to the cops and really go after the people that broke in.

Well hidden cellular game cameras is probably your best bet. Lets face it, locks & no trespassing signs keep honest people out of your stuff. If a thief wants to get your stuff, they are gonna get it. Cameras or maintaining a constant presence is about all you can do.

lots of Cameras and dummy cameras, make the dummy cameras visible, also glue an antenna on them to make them look cellular, security lights, motion detector lights, big chains and super heavy duty locks

but at the end of the day no matter what you do, they can and will beat you at it, it sucks, I hate a thief

Get a 40 ft sea container with a bad arse lock. Would be very difficult to break into. And if they want your shite bad enough, they will get it anyway.

Uh wrong. There is a pretty famous lawsuit, Katko v. Briney, out of Iowa, that specifically addressed these devices. It is taught to basically every first year law student to this day as a demonstration that under modern law deadly force is not authorized to protect personal property in the absence of the owner being present.

You do realize that is not a loaded shell? Notice the end is hollow, so just powder and a primer, no shot or slug.

We put small GPS units on our bikes and the tractor. If they do take, my phone shows it is moving and where it is going.

Do you know what causes a bullet or in this case shot to be propelled?

that thing would only pop right behind the wad. The lead shot in that shell would do nothing.

I seriously doubt it would even cause a flesh wound. If it did, it would likely be from either the plastic or the brass.

It is in no shape or form a dangerous weapon in that condition.

guns only work when the cartridge is inserted into a chamber and vise versa a cartridge only works when it is in a chamber

Have power at camp? Lights, lights and more lights is a must. No power, then solar lights. Light up the area like Fort Knox's.

Oh, leave a radio or tv playing loud too inside the camp!

Tile products are pretty reasonably priced. Just have to remember to replace them every year. I used one on my drone in case it ever disappeared.

hidden is better than secure.

example: false wall vs. safe to keep guns.

you can't steal what you don't know is there.

for the bigger stuff, this will be harder obviously, but use that mindset.

for the stuff that absolutely can't be hidden, use the method of slowing them down with an active alert to let them know someone is coming. time is a thieves friend.

mobile items like atvs, install hidden kill switches that have to be flipped for them to start.

GPS is good too, but backwoods Mississippi isnt known for the best cell coverage, which many rely on.

Hope this helps. Or just say screw it and document everything and have good insurance.

We did that 2 years ago and haven't had a poacher or theft on our lease in Wayne county since....our guy regularly drives through the lease with his unit and lives nearby
