for whatever reason the mosquitos like to hang out near my back door under the patio and end up getting in the house. what can I apply under the patio to keep mosquitos away.

A fan. That is the simplest cheapest route to keep them out of your area.
Dry up ALL standing water no matter how small. Dry everything up around your house's foundation and any things like pots or cups or anything that retains any amount of water.
Either that, or just invest in a metric ton of thermacells. And even then, I still think a good big fan is the best.

Same issue here. The porch ceiling fan on high speed does help.

how about applying something like permethrin on and around the patio? I dont mind running fans if I am outside but dont want to run them 24-7.

Same problem here. I spray the bricks around my back door with bifen every few months when I spray my perimeter. That works for a good while, but I also spray the door frame with Off when it gets really bad. Has worked good for something that became an issue for me as well.

Thermacells are funny.
Sometimes they seem to work great, sometimes not at all.
I’m not too sure it’s not all just placebo that makes me think it’s helping.
