Mono leaders with braid: yea or nae?
Posted by CharlesLSU on 5/26/20 at 1:03 pm00
I've never used a mono leader but this weekend I decide to rig all our lines with one.
Does it matter that much to visibility?

I don't think the fish care. I use one for bass fishing just because there's usually structure and it gives me a predictable break point. Flats fishing I don't bother.

I bought a new rig at Chags the other day and it got 12 lb braided with 25 lb mono.

Nay
Use fluorocarbon for leader instead

I'm interested in hearing posts about this also. Just bass fishing but on a very clear lake and have heard a lot of people saying you need fluoro leader for best results.
Doesn't that screw with casting? I run power pro 15lb braid on all my spinning reels. Learning the FG knot etc, but wondering if it is even worth it.

One benefit I hope to see is with the casting of bobbers and less tangling....just a PIA.
I use a stupid long fluoro leader and a fg knot on all my poles. Ocassionally I’ll have problems with topwaters and if I know I’ll only throw a topwater I’ll make a crazy long leader with mono instead. I backserve the end of the fg and burn it with a lighter, they can go in and out of the guides for days and never fray.

I use a fluoro leader depending on where I'm fishing.
For bass in Louisiana it usually doesn't make a difference because the water is so dirty.
I always use them when I'm inshore fishing.
I only use baitcasters. 20 or 30 pound braid. 20 pound fluoro leader.

I use 30 lb braid (8lb dia) on my saltwater spinning combos. Alberto knot to 20 lb fluorocarbon for straight to jigs and hard baits. Straight flouro on bass gear and bait casters for both fresh and salt

why would you put a flouro leader on a reel spooled with mono
It's more abrasion resistant and less visible. I use 12lb mono main line and 20lb flouro leader. I am fishing strictly inshore with this set up.

Thats why I took the braid off. I love it for being able to run stronger line but it would always tangle up on my bait. Maybe ill go back to it and run mono or floro in the same strength to prevent the tangles....

I've fished in scenarios where it didnt matter a lick. I've also fished side by side in a boat with one person (not me!) throwing a fluoro leader and the other person not. I was out-fished 10 to 1 until I tied on a leader.
Bottom line: clear water, it usually matters. Muddy water, it doesn't. In between, it's worth it to have it tied on. Usually 3-4 ft.

I use strait 15# seaguar fluorocarbon on most my Inshore rods. Topwater is mono and cork rods are 30# braid with fluorocarbon leader.
