Metal to practice welding

I just bought a small flux core welder and not really sure where to get some metal to practice with. Should I just call around to different metal suppliers? I live in Dallas. Thanks in advance.

All the big box stores and tractor supply sell angle, bar, and tubing. It's expensive, but easy to get. Your best bet may be to call a fab shop and ask if you can pay them just above scrap prices for their scrap.

if you live in the city limits go to your local dump. every time ive dropped shite off ive always seen some carbon steel, iron, or sheet metal in the dumpster.

Stay away from the retail stores. Prices are sky high. Somewhat better prices are available online. Online Metals and Metals Depot have better prices, the more you buy the better the price. For the best price, go to a local metal supply place (like Eagle National Steel in Dallas).
Keep an eye out for farm auctions, garage sales, etc. Bed frames, old tractor implements and the like all make pretty good practice materials.

I'm not for sure...but if it's just scrap you're looking to practice on...go to a recycle center..they MIGHT let you have a few pieces cheap. Or...if you know any construction sites..they might have scrap outside the gates.
Also, we always had scrap iron around the fab shops I worked in as a kid.
Radiator shops could be another place to look.
Just ideas.

Get you some 2" EMT Conduit and a conduit bender and make you some ladder stands for hunting.

call local fab shops or suppliers. fab shops may give you scraps they were planning to throw away. local suppliers will work with you and cut stuff to length, but you are going to have to pay a small premium for it.

check with the metal suppliers in your area. General Steel is who we use for a lot of fab stuff at work and most months they will have a sidewalk sale and sell things cheap that were let over from custom orders, but do not fit into a standard size for sale. Also check with some machine shops or fabricators. They might have some scrap they will sell cheap.

They usually have a few pieces marked down pretty low. I usually run by when at lowes and look for a yellow tag and see if a good deal

Bed frames
For some reason that shite is hard to weld.
OP Go to a scrap yard. Make sure your metal is clean when you practice, grind the welded surfaces to a shiny finish.
