Anybody got advice

my cousin used to have one, he found every nail nut and bolt you could think of and never found more then a couple dollars of regular coins people lost

its a good way to get exercise and get your hopes up but you got a better chance of hitting the lottery then finding anything worth anything

The new, cheap way to do it is "magnet fishing"
Tie a rope to a large magnet, and find a pier near a boat launch.
People getting in and out of boats drop things all the time.

Garrett Ace 150 or 200 . Can’t remember it’s around $200 bucks. That’s a pretty good one for a starter.

I have a Garrett AT Pro, it was just under $500.

If you have places to hunt it will be a fun hobby. If you don’t it’s going to be tough to enjoy.

I’ve been on a couple of permission hunts a friend of mine had near Port Hudson. Found a few bullets and pieces of artillery shells.

I’ve gone to a lot of parks in BR and I went to City park in N.O. Found 1943 gold class ring in city park (N.O.)

Other than that not many other places. I’ve tried to get in touch with people to get permission a few places, but a lot of people don’t want to deal with people anymore. They don’t want the hassle of someone they don’t know on their property these days. I understand the reasoning.

Had a couple guys out at Memorial Park in Ponchatoula Monday after the strawberry festival detecting around. Never got a chance to ask if they'd found anything.

It’s hard to go wrong with a Garrett. Get a good digging tool that has a serrated edge to saw through small roots.

Try to find places that attracted people prior to 1965 if you want to find silver coins. Try to find out what the laws are about metal detecting at parks where you go but I would not suggest calling the Parks Dept and asking because the Karen who answers is just going to tell you NO! regardless. If you have the NextDoor app, watch for people who post about losing rings.

I don’t know where you are in LA but search for a metal detecting club near where you live. They had a really good one in BR and some of the folks would do the hard work and get permission to hunt certain places and everyone would benefit. Drive around downtown BR very early on a weekend morning and look for construction sites and hit those but watch for cops. The strip of land between the curb and sidewalk is usually a public easement so use that info to your advantage. You’ll probably see other detectorists doing the same thing.
