Mercrusier 4.3 issues
Had my starter changed a couple of week ago and finally got out to run it today. It'll start up fine and run for about 10 minutes it'll die and allowed to cool off the same cycle continues the starboard side seems run hotter and there is greyish oil sludge pushingn thru the pcv leading to the airfilter and it looks like there is water in the oil. Anyone have experience with this and if so who you used to repair it.

Thanks

Time to check compression, pull an oil sample, all that good stuff.

Sounds like you blew a head gasket or the exhaust manifold is leaking. Or even a cracked block. Is the engine fresh water cooled or raw water cooled? Was the boat outside in the weather in winter time?

Pull the oil dip stick and see if there is gray oil on it or water. Get really to bleed your pocket book. This is NOT a easy fix.

re: Mercrusier 4.3 issues
The first part of your problem, I had a boat that acted exactly like that (mercruiser 120 hp 4cyl), but it wasn't a heat problem. It was a fuel line that was ruptured on the inside. When fuel pressure would build up, it would create a bubble inside the fuel line and close off flow, when the pressure went down, it would start and run again for a little while. It wasn't leaking any fuel externally, so it drove me nuts to finally figure it out. Not saying that is your problem, just something to check out, that doesn't cost much.

The other part of your issues, how hot is it running? and are you seeing milky oil on your dipstick? A little water condensation at The PCV isn't uncommon ( that's part of what the PCV is for, to vacuum out condensation) on an older engine, especially one that sits quite a bit. Moisture can condensate inside the valve covers, just like an empty gas can.

Wow Auggie that is exactly what mine has been doing. Start it up it idles and sounds fine but after running 15 or 20 minutes and slowing to idle it would sputter and kill , let it cool off and it would run again until you throttled back and the problem repeats. Was your problem in the tank?

re: Mercrusier 4.3 issues
Isnt it normal for those engines to run a little hotter on one side than the other?

No, mine was an older one with a mechanical fuel pump, and it had a rubber fuel line between the fuel pump and the carb, that was the one that caused the problem, because that's where it will build pressure.
If you're going to check for that, just replace any rubber fuel line between pump and carb/injector unit. Hope that's your problem. It may be something else though.

Never ran a 4.3. Always had 350's.

You want a big arse boat with twins?

Didnt we discuss this already??

If it were trailerable I'd be all over it. Life wont nearly allow for something like that any time soon.

Got you. Hate seeing the boat just sitting there.

I hate hearing it. If I had stayed single I could just take it and deal with the consequences later

OP might want to buy your engines soon though

Yep, he going to shite. One can buy a new long block complete for around $2500. To pay someone to install, add another $2500-$3000. A lot depends on the boat.

Did you ever look for milky oil on your dipstick? That'll be your first indicator how serious your problem is.
