Might not be the "best" bullet for hunting, but it will get the job done just fine.

That is a target bullet. It will have a high likelihood of exploding on impact wounding the deer. It happens with bullets such as the Hornady SST much less than a match bullet. I would not do it or recommend it.

This old gunsmith has some strong views, and I agree with him especially since I have experienced bullet failures myself and witnessed them with others.

Two gel tests, two opinions.

I wouldn't choose it but nor would I think it's unethical or anything. The last two deer we've taken were relatively short range, 100 yards or less, one with a 30-06 and one with a 300 WSM. The exit holes were so small on both that we had trouble finding them, but both deer dropped on the spot because the shots were well placed. I wouldn't worry too much about lack of expansion if you're careful with your shot.

How long is the barrel on the gun he is shooting?

Speed will make a massive difference on these.

A 24' barrel the bullet will exit the barrel between 2600-2700 fps. Inside 100yds the bullet will likely grenade.

If he's using a 16-18" barrel it will exit a 2400ish fps. At 100yds and in it will most likely get a good passthrough and mushroom. It may still grenade it if hits bone, but it probably won't be as bad.

Burn through them learning to shoot long range or sell them to AR10 range junky. Purchase hunting rounds with the money.

MK bullets will leave you crying over a good shot at some point.

He's using an 18 or 20" barrel.

Apparently many "match Bullets" are labeled that way so the military can use them, because, by definition in the Geneva Convention, armed forces can't use "hunting" rounds or labeled HPs.

So, to get around this, companies label a rounds as "open tip match" (aka HPs), but in reality, military and PDs are using these rounds in Sniper Rifles and Spec Ops M4s.

This guy even points out where Hornady describes how their Match ELDs are designed to expand upon even low velocity impacts.

Is it all just gimmick? Who knows, but that sure reads like a hunting round.

All I know is, any of it is probably better than a FMJ 30-06, which is what all the old timers used.

True, but it's a pretty low standard to compare the MK to a FJM bullet. Lots of bullets are better for hunting than a FMJ.
Disclaimer: I've never used a MK bullet for any type of hunting. Before I develop a hunting round, I research it on the internet. There's a handgun hunter who's experiences I value greatly as he's killed >500 deer w/ handguns. Regarding the MK, experiences that vary greatly from a fragile match bullet to an adequate deer hunting bullet. As little as I hunt, I don't want to have to worry about inconsistent bullet performance. In order of preference, I'd trade/sell them for a reliable deer hunting bullet or use them for practice,

Match Kings work fine, though they can be a little erratic - deer don't take much killing. If you want a premium match bullet w/ proven performance on big game I suggest you try some 155grn Lapua Scenars.
