Man shot to death in apparent hunting accident in Pike County
LINK
quote:

Troy police tell news outlets that a 61-year-old man died after being shot once in the chest with a high-powered rifle on Saturday evening.

Another article on it

Probably wasn't wearing Blaze Orange and someone thought he was a deer. Prayers to the man's family.

Damn, I thought we made it through this year without an accident like this.

Blaze orange or not, I still don't understand how this happens. I know exactly what I'm shooting and know whats behind the animal if I miss. If I can't be sure of those two then I go home empty handed.

These always make me mad. So avoidable and so careless by humans.

Regardless of orange or not, it is your responsibility to know your target and what is beyond it.

I remember once I was hunting in a partially flooded area. Heard footsteps slowly working their way toward me. Finally, I saw legs under the brush, I thought it was a deer. When he took a few more steps it was a hunter, without orange, stalk hunting. Why do people do this?

I don't understand how this happens,

If you can not identify your target don't shoot!

That’s what sucks. If you do what your supposed to or go over and above for safety, all it takes is one idiot that doesn’t care and things like this happen.

I really don't think it's possible.

Totally not acceptable. If you don't clearly see an animal, you don't shoot a high power rifle at it. I hope the guy is charged.

He could have been unseen behind what the shooter was shooting at. One of these happened years ago near Jax FL.... right near cecil field

On our first hunt of this past youth season, I told little 9 year old jembeurt this EXACT thing. Sure enough. Later that hunt, right at sunset, I saw what looked to be a buck come out but he or I couldn’t make it out. After waiting a few minutes and it was totally dark, he flashed his light on it and it was a 6 point.

We were disappointed but telling that story is a lot beeter than telling one from the OP.

It was probably near dark or after dark at 5:54pm when the call was made. So, I question “when” the trigger was pulled and if they shooter shot at movement.

I hunted all season in partially flooded timber, saw lots of deer. NEVER heard them walking through the water. I did hear some splashing when they jumped in a ditch and swam across...Deer just dont make much noise when they are walking through the woods. this is straight up carelessness
