Any real world feedback? Probably a 17 or 18ft.

I dont hate fish so dropping 25k-100k is just not an option. Just trying to take the kid to catch some fish.

Would be used by rigolets, ponchartrain, st Catherine.

No real world experience, but they look like nicer, more expensive Carolina Skiffs to me. If I could live with that hull type and was trying to fish economically I’d look at a Carolina.

Ya, I've been casually looking. Don't see to many 17 or 18 Carolinas for sale.

A nice one came up a couple weeks ago but we were out of town.

Go do a search on 2coolfishing.com. It hasn’t been updated in a while but there is a 2k plus post thread on there about the pro skiffs. By far the most informative post on pro skiffs on the web. By far!

I would not fish in Lake Pontchartrain or the Rigolets in a small skiff. Lake Catherine is doable.

Reno, Campagnas, and others built small skiffs just for this purpose that are still widely used today. You can fish Lake P in a small skiff. You can't fish Lake P in all conditions on a small skiff though

I'd look at a Reno Skiff. They're made in Ponchatoula specifically for Lake Pontchartrain, etc. The down side to having them build your boat is you'd have to take it to another vendor to have it equipped; Clint just builds the boat and sells the trailer.

Theres about 24-27 Reno that hangs by the Fourchon Public Launch at one of those camps. It's a fine vessel.

A 20' Reno is on my bucket list, but wouldn't know where to take the hull to be outfitted.

I've never been on one. I like the design and idea though. If you've never bought a boat before I would take an experienced boat owner with you when looking them over. Have heard about a good bit of quality control issues in new Mako boats. May be blown out of proportion but I haven't been in one so cant say for certain.

18ft.

I have noticed a bunch of 18ft Kenners pop up lately. Even a 21 ft might be in your budget. The older hulls are better. Might have to pick through the classified until you find one with an engine in good shape. 18-21ft Kenner is a damn good boat for SE Louisiana marsh and bay fishing

The point that I am making is that those boats do not have enough freeboard for Lake Pontchartrain or the Rigolets. I have seen those boats in person at Basspro.

Lake P changes so fast I wouldn't want to do it in a small anything.

I talked with a guy at the Southshore harbor launch Saturday AM. He had the Mako skiff 18' with a 60hp Merc. He said he really liked the boat and it rode pretty good in a light chop (modified cat hull). And he said it sipped fuel. It was a guy and his teenage kid. Looked like decent amount of room, maybe a lil tight for my taste, but if you can find a used unit that is affordable; I believe you would enjoy it.

They are fine. The Kenner’s are s good alternative as I believe that they are positive flotation, aka foamed filled hulls like whalers So don’t sink. Always nice to have. We fish an 18 out to cat island weekly. Whalers are good choice too, ride is so so but you can’t sink them

Ill have to check out the Renos, from what Ive been reading it seems that motors are pretty scarce right now as well. Theres a used Panga in madisonville, but its a little pricy for me, but might have to go take a look.

The used units with low hours that Ive found are around $10-12k.

It really isn’t hard to hang an outboard and run cables if you have access to a forklift or tractor.

I am thinking more and more of getting a reno hull fabed... What all would you have to do to prep the boat? Install all electronics? Depth finder gps weather radar / radio batteries/ trolling motor, ignition switch, lights, bilge pump and plumbing, fuel tanks, fuel lines and mount filter housings install jack plate and engine. These all seem pretty easy. Am I missing anything? What about trim tabs?
