im going to try my hand at making baits but step one is buying or involves creating the molds. i dont want to buy the expensive cnc aluminum molds, and those plastic single bait molds dont have the multi cavity pours i want to do, so making my own seems to be the best way to go.

i am planing to try to make a 5 cavity mold for 3" paddle tail swim baits and im trying to do this on a small budget.

for those of you who make your own baits and make your own molds, what do you like best for quality of the mold and durability against accidental drops etc.?

i would also love any feedback on the best place to get my plastics supplies at minimal costs.

Back in the day they used plaster of Paris. All of my molds were machined aluminum. There really is no comparison in quality.

ya, i had that one bookmarked

thinking i might want to just buy it but i'll need 2 of them so i can do 6 at a time.

still interested to know about some type of mold making. be fun to create something different maybe the fish will like it

thinking of getting the do-it molds for the jig heads too so i can make some with better 4/0 hooks. havent found any multi cavity with all the same size yet. wanting to get some for 1/4oz and then some 3/8oz sets

i have a feeling this turns out to be like a thing where its fun to play with for a while and then, not so much.

You might create a thread on SECr OT board. LanierSpots has an artificial bait business, he might be able to give some insight. He is also a guide on lake lanier in GA and ex tournament bass fisher

You're telling me that you have so much free time on your hands that fishing isn't enough? You're going to spend valuable time, that could be spent putting fish in the boat, making your own lures out of molds?

Man, I wish I had TOO MUCH free time.

For a good swimbait mold you will need a two piece Cnc mold and a hand injector. I used to get my stuff from bearsbaits for the most part. For the record I had my own hand poured bait company before I sold it.

rainy weather, 25mph winds and gusty, fronts passing through, lots of times its not good for fishing to spend at home making baits.

plus i am retired, so ya, i got lots of free time to play around with trying to make my own plastics

Well keep us updated on this little hobby you are pursuing. I think making your own baits is cool, i just definitely dont have the time or patience right now. One day when im retired maybe ill take it up. But im interested to see how yours come out
