The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission (LWFC) approved resolutions to add land to the Peason Ridge and Tunica Hills Wildlife Management Areas (WMA) during its monthly meeting in September in Baton Rouge.

Peason Ridge WMA will add 23,300 acres and Tunica Hills WMA 627 acres.

The Peason Ridge WMA acreage addition increases the WMA’s size to more than 74,000 acres. Peason Ridge WMA is located 18 miles north of Leesville and in Vernon, Sabine and Natchitoches parishes.

Tunica Hills WMA will grow to more than 6,500 acres with the added land, being provided by the Office of State Parks. Tunica Hills WMA is composed of two separate tracts lying northwest of St. Francisville in West Feliciana Parish.

Will be much more additional added to peason later as well. The new properties will be managed like fort Polk and certain areas will be closed at times due to military training

Yes, I am a member of Quail Forever and we had a meeting out there with the Kisatichi and Fort Polk biologist. That is the master plan. Burn baby burn, run tanks and disturb the ground..

Hopefully they cut down the burn size over much of the WMA. Other than a few areas, the burns can extend as far as the eye can see.

Tough conditions for a bird that typically flies 75-100 yards when flushed

If I'm not mistaken, there were some eminent domain issues with getting Peason contiguous. I'm not a big fan of that.

We have had discussions with LDWF biologist, Kisatchi biologist and Army biologist, there is some but limited game lost to the fires. Kisatchi is on a 3 year burn cycle currently which means of the 600k acres, they are burning 200k per year. Of all the days in the year, there are a limited number of burn days, due to wind, rain, moisture levels, etc. Because of the limited burn days, the burns tend to be large. It is not ideal for birds to burn in large clean blocks but it is better for the birds as a whole population to have a clean burn than to have no burn. Without the burns, the birds would have limited habitat. There was a discussion to try and have the fire teams perform less clean burns so that some cover is left, every other burn. I think that idea is still under review.
