Let me start by saying I haven't hunted deer in 20 years.

What are the main differences between .270 and 30-06?

I have been looking at savage 10/110 and 11/111 and Rem 700. Is one better than the other? I have. Nikon 3-9x40 that I will be mounting on it.

I know you get what you pay for, but Trying not to brake the bank as this will be used like 4 times a year.

Go with Savage. .270 and 30-06 use the same hull but a different diameter bullet. .270 is flatter shooting but the 30-06 is more versatile with loadings (bullet grain). Either will do the job exactly the same. I would recommend you stray from Remington though their post-freedom group rifles are not like the old 700s most grew up with.

If you are only going to hunt whitetail deer, it absolutely does not matter which one you choose. The deer will never be able to tell the difference. One other factor not previously mentioned is that the 270, using the standard 130 gr bullets, will kick slightly less than the 30/06, so if recoil is an issue then choose the 270.

I most definitely would go with the savage over the Remington right now.

I'll probably shoot hogs, but I don't see myself safari hunting in the future.

Are there major differences between the savage 10/110 and 11/111 models?

I've been shooting a 30/06 for years until this year. Its a great caliber. But if I were to chose one for deer hunting, I'd get a .270. Just for the flatter trajectory.

I haven't shot one, but I have a good friend that owns a gunsmith shop and he says the Ruger American is the best value rifle on the market today.

You can't go wrong with either caliber for whitetail deer hunting. That said, go to a large gun store and physically hold/ handle different models in your price range and decide from there.

I recently purchased a Tikka T3 Stainless Lite in 270 win. The gun handles and shoots exceptionally well, but this will be my last Tikka purchase. It is a great gun, don't get me wrong. I just want a few more features on my next rifle purchase.

Models 10/11 are short action calibers like 243, 7-08, 308.

Models 110/111 are long action calibers such as 270, 30/06 and 7mm mag.

Otherwise the rifles are basically the same

The new Model 70s are really nice. I have one in .308 and it is one of the nicest hunting rifles on the market. The bolt action is smooth and the trigger has zero creep.

I hunt with a .270. I don't do much deer hunting anymore but my kid does. He has a 7mm08 and has shot lots of deer and has never had a deer take a step after shooting it.

I have, once or twice, shot a deer that the 270 round passed clear through the deer without enough expansion to do the damage it should have.

If all I was going to hunt was deer I think I would go with the 7mm08 or a 243 or even the trusty 30-30 unless I expected to take 200 + yard shots.

You can't load the gun without the magazine in it. The top rail is directly over the cartridge entry area. Therefore, the gun is useless without the detachable magazine. You also have to detach the magazine to unload the live round, eject the live round, insert it into the detached magazine, then reattach the detachable magazine if you want to keep the gun unloaded but have a round at your disposal in the magazine.

My 700's and A-Bolts are not 100% dependent on the magazine. This is my only complaint about the T3. The gun handles extremely well and is fun to shoot: they just didn't think through this operating flaw, IMO. A spare magazine is $80 or so from Amazon. I shouldn't have to purchase a spare magazine to operate a long rifle, should my only one disappear for any reason.
