I know nothing about them, but would like to get one for fun. Probably used in fields or the beach. I don't want to go too crazy with it, but also don't want to waste some money on a model that doesn't work that great.

I'm a metal detecting nerd. Been doing it for a few years. Avoid box store detectors. The ones you buy at academy, bass pro are junk and will not give you any satisfaction. They'll make you hate the hobby.

I'd start with a Garrett Ace 250. You can get one for around $220. Familiarize yourself with the controls and hit up local parks and ball fields before trying to dig more advanced areas.

Pull tabs and beer cans will make you go crazy. And as annoying as it can be at times, dig every signal you get even if you think it is a pull tab. The soil in Louisiana also makes a lot of metal deteriorate quicker than other areas. You'll dig coins that look ancient only to find out they are 10 years old.

My best find to date is an 1882 Portuguese 20 Reis coin. It was 8'' deep in the middle of Pratt Park in Gentilly. I've also found rings, old dubloons, knives, belt buckles, buttons and old cast iron toys. I'd love to get permission from someone who owns cane fields near the MS River in Ascension/EBR/Iberville/WBR etc to do some digging for Civil War relics. I'd even give the landowner half of the finds if I dig any

Hey! My dad bought a Garrett back in the early 80s. It was top notch way back then....anyhow, I’ve come across an unexpected and unbelievable lead on an area, saw it first hand on a deer hunt, and have access. It really started the fire up- but was wondering if his “old” Garrett was still good technology or no? Sorry to hijack the thread.

For the most part the technology is similar. The biggest change I've seen in older detectors is that they don't pinpoint as close as modern ones and they may not be able to discriminate metals like newer ones. That's the biggest advantage in newer models is that ability to discriminate out certain types of metal. If I'm searching an area with lots of junk I'll discriminate iron to keep trash out. But I'm sure you can use that older Garrett and find relics.

I have kind of gathered this from my limited past experience. However, I dont want to spend a fortune. enough to get me in the game. I have no clue as far as the different coils and detectors.

I don't have any first hand experience with Equinox units. Reviews and YouTube videos look good though.

Spend some time reading...educate yourself. Whites has models at many different price points. There is no hurry to buy.

Can't go wrong with White's or Garrett detectors. I'm a Garrett fan myself but have used a couple of White's and liked them too.

Go to Kellyco website and look around

I want one real bad, but can't use one. I would love to pass over the family homestead area that dates back to the 1700's. There are bricks and crop rows that still show up in the woods. Really need a wand one to pass over logs. Having a pacemaker and being around a detector is a very big no no.

Interesting. I hadn't heard that before.

I'd volunteer to come out one day on a weekend and search around for you. I'd let you have any of the relics, especially any that have family significance.

Garrett Pro-Pointer is what I use. It's a great tool
