My 2001 f150 is on its last leg (240K miles). Ive never purchased a vehicle before so Iv only driven hand-me-downs... So, Im looking to get a low mileage, preferably under 50K miles, and a more recent year. I plan to make it last a good while and dont want to spend more than $40K. any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Auto Trader or Car Gurus

For a truck, I would look in Texas.

I am glad you posted this as I was just about to as I am looking for the same. Looking at Tundra first, but how would the board rank the Tundra, F150, Silverado, Ram, Sierra in terms of what to look for. Mainly dependability, then towing. Will later purchase a travel trailer up to around 30'. I live outside Chicago so will need to be 4x4.

I’m in this situation as well. Live in Tennessee and like the Ford and GMCs so far.

I used car gurus to find mine last year. I expanded the search to 200 miles and then to 500 miles from my zip code. I didn’t look at any from up north (cheaper) but salt on roads caused me anxiety

Best deal I found was at carvana but call me old fashioned but I like looking at my vehicle in person. Checking for sand under the hood in the corners, interior, driving, looking for signs of oil leaks, etc....

Best deal was at a car dealership in Baton Rouge. Got my truck for a few thousand cheaper than anywhere around here, Dallas, Houston, etc....

I was an F150 guy before but I absolutely love my Ram 1500. Really it’s what you prefer but for me i would go

Tundra
Ram
Ford
Chevy
GMC

I went with a ram because of the price and features. Mine is fully loaded only thing I don’t have is heated seats and steering wheel and a few convenience features that I really didn’t need

Closest tundra or F150 I could find was at least $5000 more than my Ram. Plus my Ram had less mileage than the other vehicles

I would suggest looking at a traded in fleet vehicle if you’re going used. Rental places take better maintenance care of their fleets as compared to individual owners

Basically ignore everything in this guy's post and you'll be good.

Texas Auto Direct

Bought a truck from them about 4-5 years ago and it was a flawless transaction. I’d definitely give them some consideration (at the least).

Full size Tundra first. They will be higher than the other brands. There's a reason for that. At 240,000 miles the Tundra won't be on its last leg.

40k?

You can pretty much buy any new 1/2 ton full size truck made today in a base or 1 step up model for 40k. I bought a brand new Sierra Crew Cab SLE with a 5.3 for $36,000. It came with a warranty and better financing than a used truck as well. If you've been driving a beater and can afford a new one get one.

ETA. I shopped for a couple months for new trucks at every Chevrolet and GMC dealer as far north as Alexandria from Lake Charles to Mobile. One dealership came in cheaper and it was only a couple hundred cheaper than the dealer closest to me (Barker GMC in Houma) so I just bought in Houma. Cheapest Chevy I found was believe it or not Golden Motors in Galliano.

As much as I hate to say it since I’m in the same boat, you’re prettymuch better off just shelling out another $5K and ordering something reasonable you want new. The gently used but depreciated truck is a myth right now, has been and probably will be as long as interest rates stay low and stimulus checks keep rolling in.

Just ignore everything anyone on an anonymous message board tells you and get whatever truck you like. It’s you buying not what someone else would buy.

Yeah I've bought new cars from out of town online. But would do a used one that way

As stated, you can get a well equipped new truck for 40k or under.
