Looking for decent knife sharpener.

It will be mainly used for kitchen and pocket knives. I have a sharpener but it either sucks or I do, because I can't get a knife sharp on it to save my life. TIA

Worksharp. Will change your life. I sucked at sharpening as well. Now I am a pro!

I have used a Lansky for over 25yrs. I use it to keep kitchen, pocket, & hunting knives sharp.
But, better steel blades leads to sharper knives, and knives that don't need sharpening as often..

Worksharp definitely requires the least amount of skill and is good. I prefer the Smith stone with the yellow and red side. They're cheap and get a knife sharper than any other sharpener I've used but they require a little skill. Not saying I'm a pro, but it takes some skill with the angles and such.

My buddy busted out one of those while we were cleaning a deer once. I had no idea wtf it was. It worked but that's too much commotion just to sharpen a knife. Cabelas sells a really good coarse diamond stone that's about $20 and is the best thing I've ever had. Sharpens even my hard bladed bench made very fast. I have a ceremic brick that I dumpster dove and an old leather belt for when I have some time and want my knife razor sharp. I find that when I go through all that trouble to get my knife super sharp it'll seem to dull quicker. Not sure if that's true or not but 99% of the time the rough diamond stone is the fastest and bestest.

Someone just gave me a Diamond Stone 2 stage sharpener. Seems to work really well and is very easy. I'll know for sure when the chef at the camp has time to check it out.

Havalon and Cutco. Forget sharpening.

Will be looking soonest, but a nice sharpener is good to have for decent existing knives.

Bought a Worksharp recently and that is definitely the knife sharpener for the uskilled. I always fought with holding the proper angle on all other sharpeners. Not a problem with the Worksharp. I had every knife I own, kitchen knives, hunting knives, filet knives, whatever, shaving in a matter of 30 minutes total time.
Now for the downside. A buddy of mine asked me to sharpen a PUMA pocket knife for him. The knife has a clip blade, and the tip comes to a very fine point. Worksharp warns you that the sharpener will round the point on some knives and gives instruction on how to avoid this. Well, the sharpener just wouldn't work for this knife. It didn't round the point, but it didn't sharpen all the way to the tip either. The problem is the tip of the blade becomes too narrow and the guide won't hold the blade as you approach the tip.
I have tried fixed diamond stones, Lansky sharpeners, the works. This is still my absolute favorite, but I have to admit it may not be the fit for every knife.
One more thing, I bought the standard model from Academy. I would be interested in hearing if their "Ken Onion" deluxe model has the same issue. I know it uses a wider belt. I plan on upgrading soon, regardless of whether it fixes the issue I had. It has an adjustable angle guide and my model requires you switching the guide component.

Lansky is the best. A 12 year old can use this. Sharpens enough to shave hair with any blade

Spyderco triangle sharpmaker. If you can’t get a razor sharp edge in a few minutes, something is seriously wrong.
If you really want it scary sharp, get some herbs Yellowstone on a leather strop to finish.

I have that model. Get it and get the blade grinding accessory that uses the 18" belts. You can get leather stropping belts for it too.

I bought a Lansky and have used it for the last 30 years....I suspect that it will be the last knife sharpener that I ever buy, but would buy exactly the same thing again if I needed one.
